Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass

The explosion of shattering glass tore through the autumn silence like a gunshot, sending razor-sharp shards flying across the porch. Elena instinctively ducked, pulling her dark trench coat up to shield her face as heavy boots slammed against the interior floorboards behind the broken window.

"Clear! Room two is clear!" a gruff voice shouted from inside the living room.

Julian spun around, his gray suit jacket billowing as he drew a compact service pistol from a shoulder holster with surprising speed. "What is the meaning of this?" Julian roared, pointing the weapon toward the shattered window frame where a third black-suited operative was now climbing into the house.

Miller didn't flinch at the chaos. Instead, a cold, calculating smile spread across his face. He lunged forward, his massive hand shooting out to grab the wooden clipboard right out of Elena’s grasp.

"You talk too much, Vance," Miller sneered, wrenching the clipboard away with brute force. The metal clip snapped, and the top papers scattered into the wind, swirling like autumn leaves across the lawn.

Elena reacted with instinctive fury. Ignoring the danger, she launched herself forward, driving her shoulder directly into Miller’s chest. The larger man stumbled back against the white wooden siding, surprised by the ferocity of her assault. The wooden clipboard clattered loudly against the floorboards, its contents spilling across the splintered wood.

Julian tracked the falling papers with wide eyes, his pistol wavering between Miller and the operative emerging from the window. "Stop! Don't let those touch the ground!" Julian yelled, dropping to his knees to grab a loose page before the wind could carry it away.

The female agent drew her weapon, aiming directly at Elena’s back as she pinned Miller against the wall. "Step away from the asset, Mrs. Vance, or I will drop you where you stand," she commanded, her finger tightening on the trigger with chilling precision.

Elena froze, feeling the cold circle of the pistol barrel hovering mere inches from the back of her trench coat. The wind howled around the porch, carrying the papers toward the edge of the roof.

"Go ahead and shoot," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with adrenaline but devoid of fear. "Every page has already been backed up to a secure cloud server that activates the moment my heartbeat stops."

The female agent hesitated, her eyes darting toward Miller for confirmation. Miller shoved Elena off him with a violent shove, sending her sprawling across the rough wooden boards. He straightened his black suit jacket, breathing heavily, and looked down at Julian, who was desperately clutching a single damp page in his trembling hands.

"You think you won, Elena?" Miller chuckled darkly, wiping a speck of dust from his lapel. "You just handed us the exact encryption key we needed to trace your daughter's digital footprint."
