Chapter 8 - The Hidden Panel

The heavy mahogany bookshelves smelled of aged leather and accumulated dust. Ava’s trembling fingers swept across the rows of books, pushing and pulling at random volumes in a desperate bid to find the hidden trigger mechanism shown on the blueprint. Time was running out; the red marker on the laptop screen was no longer stationary. It was creeping slowly, deliberately toward the center of the hallway, right outside the study.

"Come on, come on," Ava muttered under her breath, her voice tight with panic as her fingernails scraped against the wooden shelving.

She pressed down on a faux-leather edition of an 1898 encyclopedia. With a satisfying, mechanical clack, a section of the heavy shelving unit gave way, popping inward with a soft pneumatic hiss. Ava didn't hesitate. She threw her weight against the side of the bookcase, and the entire wooden panel swung inward on hidden steel hinges, revealing a pitch-black, narrow vertical shaft just wide enough for one person to squeeze through.

A draft of cold air rushed out from the dark opening, carrying the metallic scent of damp concrete and rust.

From the hallway outside the main door, a sharp, metallic scratch echoed against the wood. Someone was sliding a key into the deadbolt. The tumblers began to turn with agonizing slowness.

Ava dove headfirst into the dark shaft, pulling the heavy bookcase closed behind her just as the main study door clicked open.

She lay flat on her stomach on a cold, rough concrete floor in absolute pitch blackness. She held her breath, pressing her face against her arms to muffle the sound of her own ragged breathing. Through the narrow crack where the secret panel met the wall, a sliver of warm light cut across the darkness.

Footsteps entered the study. Heavy, measured, expensive shoes clicked against the mahogany floorboards, pacing slowly around the desk.

"I know you're in here, little sister," a smooth, chillingly calm voice murmured inside the study. It was a man's voice—refined, educated, but utterly devoid of human warmth. "You can hide behind the books all you want, but the house always tells me where you are."

Ava’s heart hammered against the concrete floor so loudly she was certain the man could hear it through the wood. She inched backward into the suffocating dark, her hands feeling along the rough concrete walls for a way down. Her fingers brushed against a cold metal handrail bolted into the side of a steep, winding spiral staircase plunging downward into the bowels of the estate.

She gripped the railing, her white knit sweater catching on a sharp burr of rusted iron, but she yanked herself free without a sound. She began to descend the spiraling steps into the subterranean depths of the house, leaving the voices and the lies far behind, unaware that the basement she was entering held the darkest secret of all.
