Chapter 4 - The Brass Key

The heavy brass key felt icy cold against Ava’s skin, contrasting sharply with the ambient warmth of the holiday-decorated living room. It was notched with irregular, hand-filed grooves that hinted it wasn't made for a standard modern deadbolt, but rather an old, heavy mortise lock—the kind found only in the restricted East Wing of the estate, an area Marcus had strictly forbidden her to enter since the first day she set foot in the house.
"Don't you dare touch that key," Marcus roared, lunging forward with a speed that defied his heavy build.
He reached out to snatch the key from Ava’s hand, but Elena intercepted him with a vicious, lightning-fast shove to his chest that sent the towering man stumbling against the Christmas tree. Ornaments rattled and fell to the floor, shattering into brilliant shards of red and silver glass that scattered across the polished wood. Marcus caught himself on the branch of the fir tree, pine needles showering over his shoulders as he stared at his wife with unbridled hatred.
"Keep your hands off her, Marcus," Elena commanded, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute command. "The girl has a right to her own history. Or are you afraid of what she'll find behind that oak door at the end of the second-floor hallway?"
Ava clutched the key tighter, her knuckles turning white. She looked from Marcus's sweat-streaked, panic-stricken face to Elena's cold, calculating mask. The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating, broken only by the crackle of a dying log in the fireplace.
"What is up there?" Ava demanded, finding a well of strength she didn't know she possessed. She stood up from the sofa, towering over the cardboard box of cleaning supplies that had started this entire confrontation. "What did you hide behind that door, Marcus?"
Marcus slowly straightened up, brushing pine needles from his brown blazer. The panic in his eyes receded, replaced by a dark, dangerous calculation. He let out a low, humorless chuckle that sent a shiver straight down Ava's spine.
"You think finding out the truth makes you brave, Ava?" Marcus sneered, taking a slow step toward her. "You think walking into that room is going to give you answers? It won't. It's going to trap you in the exact same cage we’ve been rotting in for five years. Once you turn that key, there is no going back to scrubbing floors and pretending you're safe."
Elena stepped closer to Ava, whispering fiercely into her ear. "Go upstairs now, Ava. Before he finds a way to stop you permanently."
May you like
Ava turned on her heel and bolted toward the dark, yawning hallway.
