Chapter 11 - The Manila Folder

The manila folder lay flat on the industrial metal desk, its thick brown paper bulging slightly under the weight of decades of institutional documentation. The fluorescent overhead light hummed a high-pitched, steady note that grated against Ava’s raw nerves. She stood frozen a few feet away, her hands shaking at her sides as she stared at the folder as if it were a venomous snake coiled ready to strike.
"You're lying," Ava whispered, the words catching in her dry throat. "That's impossible. People aren't... that isn't real."
Julian tilted his head, his expression remaining entirely placid, almost bored by her denial. "Medical science surpassed your imagination twenty-five years ago, Ava. When the original Nia suffered an irreversible neurological trauma during a hostile corporate takeover involving our family's assets, Marcus and Elena panicked. They couldn't afford to lose the primary heir to the trust. So, they funded an off-the-books genetic research facility in Zurich to grow a replacement."
He stepped closer, tapping his index finger against the edge of the manila folder. "You were decanted twenty-two years ago, raised in a foster system designed to monitor your development, and then carefully maneuvered into this household under the guise of an ordinary housekeeping job to test your cognitive stability before the final asset transfer. The cleaning supplies you opened under the Christmas tree? That was your final psychological evaluation. You passed."
Ava felt the room tilt sideways. The warm, festive memories of the living room upstairs—the lit Christmas tree, the crackling fireplace, the simple illusion of a normal holiday—shattered into a million irretrievable pieces. Her entire life, her memories of childhood, her struggles, her identity—all of it was a fabricated narrative written by the cold, calculating monsters standing outside her perimeter.
"If I'm just a replacement," Ava choked out, tears finally spilling hot and fast down her cheeks, "then why keep the real Nia alive down in that cell? Why not just get rid of her?"
Julian’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, chilling shadow that hardened his features. "Because the original Nia’s bone marrow contains a rare genetic marker required to authorize the final liquidation of the family trust. Without her living, breathing consent—or a direct genetic override from a viable clone—the banks lock the accounts forever."
Before Ava could process the full, horrific implications of his words, a loud, metallic crash echoed from the top of the spiral staircase behind them.
Heavy, chaotic footsteps thundered down the concrete steps, accompanied by Marcus’s furious voice roaring through the bunker.

"Julian! I know you're down here, you manipulative bastard! Hand over the keys, or I swear to God I'll burn this entire estate to the ground!"
