Chapter 5 - The East Wing Threshold

The hardwood floorboards groaned beneath Ava’s frantic footsteps as she sprinted away from the living room, leaving Marcus and Elena behind in the glowing wreckage of the Christmas tree. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, each beat deafening in the echoing quiet of the grand estate. She rounded the corner, taking the sweeping staircase two steps at a time, her dark pants swishing against her legs as she raced toward the second-floor landing.

The air grew noticeably cooler the further she climbed away from the fireplace. The festive cheer downstairs faded entirely, replaced by the heavy, stagnant scent of old cedar, dust, and dried rose petals. When she reached the top of the stairs, she paused, her chest heaving as she caught her breath under the pale moonlight pouring through the tall stained-glass window.

The East Wing hallway stretched out before her like a dark tunnel. It was a part of the house Marcus had always claimed was structurally unsound—a lie designed to keep prying eyes away from whatever secrets lay sealed behind its heavy mahogany doors.

Ava gripped the heavy brass key tightly in her fist, its intricate metal ridges digging painfully into her palm. She walked slowly down the corridor, her footsteps muted by the thick Persian runner beneath her feet. Portraits of stern ancestors lined the walls, their painted eyes seemingly tracking her every move with silent judgment.

At the very end of the hallway stood the door: a massive slab of dark, polished oak secured not just by a standard lock, but by a secondary heavy brass deadbolt that matched the key in her hand.

She inserted the key into the primary lock. It slid in with a satisfying, well-oiled click that proved someone had been maintaining these mechanisms despite the abandoned facade of the wing. She turned it once, twice, feeling the heavy tumblers fall into place. Then, she slid the brass deadbolt back with a metallic screech that echoed loudly through the silent hallway.

With trembling fingers, Ava pushed the heavy door open. It swung inward smoothly, revealing a pitch-black room that smelled faintly of expensive vanilla perfume and fresh printer toner.

She reached blindly along the wall until her fingers brushed against a brass light switch. She flipped it upward.

Bathed in the sudden, harsh glare of overhead recessed lighting, Ava gasped aloud, dropping the brass key onto the floor as she stared in sheer horror at the desk in the center of the room. Sitting right there in the brightly lit study was an identical laptop to the one in the box downstairs—and its webcam light was blinking green, recording her every move.
