Chapter 7: The Boardroom Battlefield

The forty-second-floor boardroom of Sterling Global Enterprises was a monument to corporate power. A massive circular table carved from a single slab of African mahogany dominated the center of the room, surrounded by ergonomic leather chairs currently occupied by the nine remaining members of the board of directors. At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, his posture rigid, his face like carved granite.
When the heavy frosted-glass doors swung open, all eyes turned toward the entrance.
Maeve walked in, wearing the same beige hoodie and grey sweatpants she had worn during the confrontation in the ballroom. She carried no briefcase, no leather folder, just a single flash drive pinched between her fingers. Walking beside her was Marcus Vance, Victoria Val’s high-priced attorney, who had managed to force his way into the meeting by invoking emergency shareholder clauses. Vance wore a bespoke charcoal suit and a smug, condescending smile that suggested he had already won the case before sitting down.
"Mr. Sterling, this is an outrage," Vance began immediately, his voice booming across the polished wood table. "Allowing an unverified individual—dressed in athletic leisurewear, no less—into a confidential board meeting of a Fortune 500 company violates every protocol of corporate governance. Furthermore, my client, Miss Val, intends to file criminal charges of assault, trespassing, and defamation by the end of the day."
Arthur didn't blink. He raised one hand, silencing the lawyer with a single gesture. "Marcus, sit down before I have security throw you out the window. This is a family matter, and as legal counsel for the board, you are here strictly as an observer."
Vance bristled, but took a seat near the end of the table, casting a venomous glare toward Maeve.
Maeve walked to the center of the room, plugging the small flash drive into the media port embedded in the mahogany table. Instantly, a massive high-definition screen behind the board members illuminated with a complex, color-coded financial tree that traced millions of dollars in unauthorized wire transfers from the Sterling Foundation straight to private accounts in the Cayman Islands and Boston real estate firms.
Murmurs erupted around the table. Several senior directors leaned forward, their faces pale as they recognized their own rubber-stamped approvals embedded in the digital metadata.
"For the past three years," Maeve began, her voice calm, resonant, and entirely devoid of hesitation, "while this board focused on quarterly dividends, the foundation's primary reserves were systematically drained by Victoria Val and her inner circle of Boston associates. Total extraction: forty-seven million, six hundred thousand dollars."

"Baseless allegations!" Vance shouted, jumping to his feet. "Digital fabrication! There is no proof that these files originated from authorized servers!"
Maeve didn't raise her voice. She simply tapped a key on her small remote, bringing up a notarized digital certificate with an unalterable cryptographic timestamp. "The cryptographic signature on every single one of these transactions matches Victoria Val's personal private key. The same key she used to log into the executive terminal every morning at 8:15 AM."
