Chapter 14: The Final Ledger

By midnight, the confession was complete, encrypted, and backed up across three independent secure servers that even the most skilled hackers at Meridian Logistics could never touch. Victoria sat slumped in the guest chair, looking like a ghost of the brilliant, untouchable socialite who had screamed 'Get out!' in the grand ballroom less than forty-eight hours earlier.

Arthur Sterling walked back into the office just as Maeve ejected the master flash drive from her terminal. He looked at Victoria with a mixture of pity and cold resolve before turning his attention to his niece.

"The federal prosecutor has agreed to the terms," Arthur said, tossing a leather folder onto the glass desk. "Full cooperation in exchange for a reduced sentence and immediate entry into the federal witness protection program upon conclusion of the trial against Meridian Logistics."

Victoria looked up at the old man, her eyes heavy with fatigue. "I'm sorry, Arthur. For all of it. I thought I was building an empire, but I was just building a cage."

"A cage of your own design, Victoria," Arthur said quietly, without malice. "May it teach you a lesson the hard way."

Two federal marshals, quiet and unassuming in dark suits, stepped out from the private elevator alcove, escorting Victoria down toward the subterranean parking garage where an unmarked vehicle waited in the rain. She didn't look back as the frosted-glass doors slid closed behind her.

Maeve stood by the window, watching the tail lights of the federal vehicle merge with the wet traffic on the West Side Highway. The city outside was dark, indifferent, and vast, but within the walls of Sterling Global, the balance of power had permanently shifted.

"The federal indictment against Meridian Logistics goes public at 6:00 AM tomorrow," Arthur said, walking over to stand beside her. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder. "Marcus Vance and his associates won't know what hit them."

"They'll know," Maeve said, her voice carrying the quiet strength of a woman who had reclaimed her birthright. "They'll know Julian Sterling's daughter came back to settle the account."

Arthur smiled, raising his coffee mug in a silent toast to the empty night air. "To the next generation."
