Chapter 13: The Confession

The quiet of the executive suite felt heavy, punctuated only by the distant wail of a siren somewhere down on the wet streets of Manhattan. Victoria sat motionless in the leather chair, her wet trench coat soaking into the upholstery, though neither woman cared about the damage.
"What happens to me now?" Victoria asked, her voice barely audible above the hum of the cooling system on the desk terminal. "The federal prosecutors have the wire transfer records. Marcus isn't answering my calls, and my family name is mud in every country club from here to Boston."
"You cooperate with the federal investigation," Maeve said, leaning forward and resting her elbows on the glass desk. "You hand over every single communication, email, and meeting transcript between you, Thomas Vance, and Meridian Logistics regarding the asset siphoning over the last three years."
Victoria flinched, her head snapping up. "If I testify against Meridian, they'll destroy me. Those people don't just use corporate lawyers; they silence anyone who threatens their operations."
"They won't have the power to touch you if you're under federal witness protection as the star cooperating witness," Maeve countered, her gaze unwavering. "It's your only way out of a twenty-year prison sentence for corporate fraud and embezzlement."
Victoria stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, searching Maeve's face for any sign of mercy or deceit. She found only cold, mathematical certainty. "Why are you offering this to me? After everything I did... after I shoved you to the floor in front of everyone... why save me?"
"I'm not saving you, Victoria. I'm using you," Maeve said honestly. "You were just a pawn in a much larger game played by men who killed my father and stole my family's legacy. If you want to salvage what's left of your life, you help me take down the board that put you in that position."
Victoria swallowed hard, the last remnants of her arrogance dissolving completely. She nodded slowly, the motion almost imperceptible. "What do you need me to do?"

Maeve slid a pristine digital recorder across the glass desk toward the blonde woman. "Start from the beginning. Tell me about every conversation you had with Thomas Vance when he set up those shell corporations in Boston."
For the next two hours, the executive suite became a confessional. Victoria spoke in a low, exhausted monotone, detailing the illicit meetings in quiet hotel suites, the secret instructions given by Marcus Vance's father, and the systematic plan to bankrupt the Sterling Foundation from within. Maeve recorded every word, her fingers moving silently across the keyboard as she cross-referenced each name and date with the digital archives.
