Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

The tension in the study thickened, shifting from corporate panic to raw, generational grief. Arthur lowered himself onto the edge of the mahogany desk, looking twenty years older than he had downstairs in the ballroom. The gold signet ring on his pinky finger caught the lamp light as he rubbed his temples, trying to process a ghost walking back into his life in a pair of grey sweatpants and a stained beige hoodie.

"Why tonight, Maeve?" Arthur asked, his voice cracking slightly. "Why make a public spectacle of it downstairs? We could have handled this in private, away from the press, away from the society vultures."

"Because quiet meetings are where families like ours bury the truth, Arthur," Maeve replied, leaning against the bookshelf filled with leather-bound legal codes. "If I had walked in here with a briefcase and an appointment, Henderson and his corporate fixers would have had me buried under three tiers of injunctions by midnight. Victoria needed to show her true colors in front of three hundred witnesses. She needed to lose her temper, lose her grip, and prove to your board of directors that she is a reactive, unstable liability."

Victoria stood up abruptly, knocking her chair back against the wainscoting. Henderson reached out to grab her arm, but she shook him off with a violent jerk. "You planned this!" Victoria screamed, her composure completely shattering. "You walked into that gala looking like a vagrant just to provoke me! You wanted me to hit you! You wanted them to see me snap!"

"I didn't make you steal from the foundation, Victoria," Maeve said calmly, her eyes never leaving the frantic blonde. "I didn't force you to forge those signatures or transfer those funds to the Cayman accounts. You did all of that of your own free will, driven by the exact same greed that made you think you could erase my father's legacy."

"Enough!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the study, echoing off the mahogany walls with an authority that had built an empire. Both women fell silent. Arthur looked at Victoria, the disappointment in his eyes cutting deeper than any physical blow. "You're done, Victoria. Effective immediately, your access codes are revoked, your company vehicle is impounded, and my personal security detail will escort you off this property before the clock strikes midnight."

Victoria stared at the old man, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. She realized in that instant that her alliance with the Sterling name was finished. All the galas, the charity boards, the expensive jewelry, and the social standing had evaporated in less than an hour, undone by a single red-haired woman standing in casual athletic wear.

Without another word, Victoria turned and stormed out of the study, Henderson scrambling to pick up his leather briefcase and hurry after her, his expensive shoes squeaking on the hardwood floor.
