The Cast of Glass / Chapter 9 / 10

The House on the Hill

One year after the day the cast was broken, life had found its true, natural rhythm.

The craftsman house among the pines was filled with the sounds of ordinary, beautiful domestic peace: the aroma of fresh sourdough bread baking in the oven, the cheerful barking of a golden retriever puppy chasing fallen leaves in the yard, and the steady, rhythmic scratching of pencils across graph paper.

David and Toby sat at the large oak dining table, working together on a wooden model bridge made of balsa wood and cotton suspension strings.

"Look at the load distribution, Toby," David explained, placing a small metal weight on the center span. "When the trusses are aligned to ninety degrees, the force doesn't strain the joints; it transfers straight down into the foundation."

Toby adjusted the center beam with a pair of tweezers. The structure held firm, not dipping a single millimeter.

"Like stone," Toby smiled, looking up with bright, clear eyes that were no longer haunted by soot or dark basements.

Sarah walked in from the kitchen, placing a plate of warm apple fritters on the table between them. She ruffled Toby’s thick, clean brown hair, kissing his forehead.

"Official adoption decree arrived from the county courthouse this afternoon," Sarah announced with a wide, radiant smile. "You are officially Toby Linwood-Miller."

Toby looked at the embossed parchment, then reached out and pressed his grandfather’s brass certification stamp into the blue wax seal at the bottom of the page, marking his new name with the unbroken integrity of his past.
