The Messenger from the Foundation

Before Arthur’s fingers could touch the bag, Dr. Linwood stepped between them, her jaw set like granite.

"Proprietary property hidden inside a fraudulent medical device in an ICU suite, Mr. Vance?" Sarah asked, her voice dangerously calm. "You claimed incapacitation to avoid a federal subpoena in the North Bridge collapse inquiry. You had our department sign false medical affidavits under penalty of perjury."

The boy stood quietly at the corner of the bed, watching the elderly titan unravel.

"Who are you, son?" Dr. Linwood asked gently, kneeling down on the cold floor to meet the boy’s eye level. "How did you get up to the twentieth floor?"

"My name is Toby," the boy replied, his voice small but steady. "My grandfather was John Miller. He was the head welder on the North Bridge."

The room went dead silent.

John Miller had been the sole foreman who refused to sign off on the substandard steel pilings used in the lower harbor bridge project five years ago—the bridge that collapsed during the autumn storm last month, claiming twelve lives. John Miller had died three days after the collapse in what local authorities had ruled an accidental house fire.

"Grandpa made me practice where to find the stone," Toby said, looking at Arthur. "He told me the big man in the high room would try to hide the black drive in the place where nobody would ever cut. He said when the pain gets too heavy, the truth has to break the stone."

Arthur sank back into the pillows, his face gray, his chest heaving as if the air in the multi-million-dollar suite had suddenly turned to ash.
