The Unshakable Light

That evening, the family drove to the completed observation park at the foot of the new John Miller Memorial Crossing.
The bridge was magnificent—soaring gracefully across the wide harbor beneath a twilight sky of lavender, rose, and deep indigo. Thousands of warm white LED lights illuminated the structural cables, casting brilliant, unbroken reflections across the tranquil water below.
Cars glided safely across the span, their headlights moving in a gentle, continuous ribbon of light connecting two sides of a city that had once been divided by greed and fear.
Toby stood at the granite railing, feeling the cool ocean breeze on his face. In his pocket, his hand rested on the smooth river stone he had carried out of the dark so many months ago.
Sarah and David stood on either side of him, their hands resting securely on his shoulders.
