Chapter 9 - The Siege at the Drainage Hatch

The screech of tearing metal echoed off the curved concrete walls of the subterranean tunnel as the heavy iron door buckled under the force of hydraulic spreaders. Sparks showered across the damp floor as the exterior locking mechanism finally gave way with a deafening snap.
“They’re breaching!” the lead tactical operative shouted, swinging his assault rifle around to face the corridor entrance.
Director Vance didn't hesitate. He grabbed Parker by the collar of his uniform shirt, hauling him to his feet with surprising strength.
“Where is the drive, Parker? Give it to me right now or I swear I’ll leave you here for the state troopers to interrogate,” Vance hissed, his face twisted into an expression of desperate panic.
Parker winced, pressing his back against the slick concrete wall while keeping his hands raised.
“I don't have it on me! I hid it inside the waterproof casing of the drainage sump pump twenty yards down the hallway before you guys even arrived!”
Maya scrambled to her feet, her eyes darting between the battered iron door and the dark, dripping corridor stretching into the shadows. Without a word of warning, she bolted into the darkness away from the group, her burgundy sweatshirt blending seamlessly into the subterranean gloom.
“Stop her!” Vance roared, shoving Parker aside and drawing his sidearm.
The lead operative raised his rifle, tracking Maya’s fleeing silhouette through his night-vision scope, but before he could squeeze the trigger, the heavy iron door burst completely off its hinges, crashing heavily onto the concrete floor.
A flood of armed state troopers poured into the tunnel, their flashlights cutting blinding swathes through the smoke and dust as they dropped into tactical firing positions.
“Federal agents, drop your weapons! Drop them right now!” a voice bellowed from the front of the police line, echoing thunderously down the narrow corridor.
Director Vance slowly lowered his pistol, though his jaw remained clamped tight in stubborn defiance. He raised his hands just enough to show compliance, stepping smoothly in front of the tactical operatives to shield their identities behind his civilian suit.
“Lower your firearms, Troopers,” Vance said, his voice dropping into its most authoritative federal register.
“You are interfering with a classified national security operation authorized under presidential directive.”
The state police captain stepped forward, his face illuminated by the harsh blue strobe of his tactical helmet light. He didn't lower his assault rifle an inch.
“I don't care about your presidential directives, Director. We just pulled a charred body out of a residential gas explosion three blocks away, and dispatch logs place you and your operatives directly at the scene of an unauthorized jurisdictional extraction. You’re all under arrest for federal kidnapping and reckless endangerment.”
Parker seized the moment of absolute confusion as the state troopers swarmed forward to cuff Vance and his operatives. Dropping low to the ground, he ducked behind a stack of industrial drainage pipes and scrambled rapidly down the dark corridor in the exact direction Maya had fled just moments earlier.
The sound of shouting, metal cuffs clicking, and boot heels splashing in the puddles faded behind him as Parker plunged deeper into the labyrinth of concrete tunnels. Water dripped rhythmically from the ceiling overhead, splashing into the murky pools at his feet. After running breathless for nearly three minutes, he spotted a faint amber glow emanating from a maintenance alcove off to the right.
He slowed his pace, creeping cautiously toward the alcove with his hands held up defensively.
“Maya? It’s just me, Parker. Don't shoot—well, you don't have a weapon, but don't hit me with anything heavy.”
The amber light flickered, casting long, dancing shadows across the damp brick walls. Maya stepped out from the shadows of the alcove, holding a small, blinking waterproof micro-drive in her hand. Her face was smudged with soot, and her eyes burned with an intense, unyielding fire.
“I found the drive, Parker,” Maya said quietly, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear.
“And I already plugged it into my phone using an adapter. I know who my real parents were... and I know what Vance and his team did to them.”

Parker stared at the blinking LED light on the tiny drive, his breath catching in his throat as he realized the fragile balance of power had just shifted entirely into her hands.
