Chapter 12 - The Abandoned Federal Rail Line

The heavy metal access grate shattered against the concrete platform below with a resounding clang, scattering flakes of ancient rust across the dusty floor. Parker dropped through the opening first, landing in a clumsy roll before scrambling to his feet to catch Maya as she slid down behind him.
They stood in the center of an enormous subterranean railway station that had been completely wiped off all public transit maps decades ago. Massive arched concrete ceilings spanned overhead, draped in thick cobwebs and illuminated only by pale moonlight filtering down through cracked glass skylights high above the street level. Resting on the center tracks was an old, heavy-duty electric maintenance railcar covered in a thick layer of dust.
Maya coughed, brushing soot from her burgundy sweatshirt as she looked around the desolate station.
“Is this the railcar?” she asked, her voice echoing hollowly through the cavernous space.
“This is it,” Parker replied, sprinting toward the front cab and tearing open the rusted side door with a loud screech of metal.
He scrambled inside the cramped driver’s compartment, immediately ripping away the dashboard paneling with his bare hands to expose the tangled web of ignition wires beneath. His fingers danced frantically across the color-coded cables, twisting and stripping copper leads until a dull amber dashboard light flickered to life with a low electrical hum.
Maya kept watch near the edge of the dark tunnel they had just escaped from, her eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of their pursuers. The acrid white chemical smoke from the ventilation shaft still drifted faintly through the air, carrying the muffled sound of approaching tactical boots echoing down the tracks.
“Parker, they’re almost here!” Maya called out urgently, her hand instinctively reaching into her pocket to grip her smartphone.
“Hurry up!”
Parker jammed two exposed copper wires together.
SPARK.
A bright blue flash illuminated the cab, followed immediately by the deep, resonant thrum of an electric motor grinding to life beneath the floorboards. The heavy railcar lurched forward on its iron tracks with a metallic groan, sending dust billowing into the air around them.
“Get in! Now!” Parker shouted, leaning across the seat to swing the passenger door wide open.

Maya sprinted across the platform, grabbing the metal handrail and hauling herself inside just as the beam of a high-intensity tactic
