Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Chase

The shrill electronic screech of a tracking beacon echoed menacingly down the damp concrete corridor, bouncing off the curved walls and multiplying until it sounded like a dozen alarms ringing at once. Maya pocketed her smartphone with the micro-drive still attached, her boots splashing furiously through the murky puddles as she sprinted side-by-side with Parker deeper into the subterranean maze.

“Which way?” Maya shouted over the roar of distant industrial water pumps.

Parker panted heavily, his chest heaving as he scanned the intersecting tunnels ahead of them.

“Left! That leads to the old railway maintenance spur connecting to the abandoned federal transit line. If we can reach the maintenance railcar parked on track four, we can ride it straight out of the municipal watershed before Vance’s cleanup crew locks down the sector.”

They rounded the corner at a dead sprint, their breathing ragged in the humid air. Behind them, heavy footsteps and sharp metallic clanks announced the arrival of the secondary tactical unit—operatives who answered directly to the shadow network within the federal agency, unbound by state police jurisdiction or municipal oversight.

CRACK.

A silenced rifle shot rang out down the hallway, the bullet chipping a sharp shard of concrete from the brick wall mere inches above Parker’s head.

“Keep your head down!” Parker yelled, shoving Maya behind a thick concrete support pillar as a second round ricocheted loudly off the metal water pipes overhead.

Maya peeked around the edge of the pillar, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She unzipped the pocket of her burgundy sweatshirt, pulling out her smartphone to check the GPS tracking interface on the micro-drive’s root directory. A glowing red dot flashed on the screen, indicating that their pursuers were less than two hundred yards away and closing the gap rapidly.

“They’re using thermal tracking tied to our body heat,” Maya said quickly, her voice tight with panic.

“If we stay in these open tunnels, they’ll pick us off before we even reach the rail spur.”

Parker gritted his teeth, scanning the ceiling overhead where a heavy cast-iron ventilation grate hung loosely from rusted bolts.

“Give me a boost!” Parker ordered, leaping upward to catch the edge of the metal frame with both hands.

Maya didn't hesitate. She grabbed Parker around the ankles and heaved upward with all her strength, pushing him toward the opening. Parker strained every muscle, kicking his legs until his shoulders squeezed through the narrow ventilation shaft just as another silenced round whined past into the wall below.

Once inside the shaft, Parker reached down a hand, grabbing Maya firmly by the wrist and hauling her upward into the dark, dusty conduit just as heavy tactical boots rounded the corner into their previous position.

“Target has split vertically into the ventilation grid! Deploy thermal smoke canisters!” a muffled voice shouted from the corridor below.

A thick, acrid cloud of white chemical smoke began to billow upward into the ventilation shaft, stinging their eyes and filling their throats with a bitter, metallic taste. Maya coughed violently, pulling the collar of her burgundy sweatshirt up over her nose and mouth as she scrambled blindly behind Parker through the cramped metal duct.

“Keep moving! Don't look back!” Parker wheezed, crawling on his hands and knees through the dark, narrow space until a faint glimmer of moonlight began to filter in from an opening up ahead.

With one final desperate push, Parker kicked outward against a rusted access grate, sending it crashing down onto the concrete floor of a vast, cavernous underground railway platform below.
