Chapter 4 - The Unmarked SUV

The blinding headlights cut through the dusty air of the impound bay, casting long, distorted shadows across the rows of wrecked vehicles. Maya scrambled backward out of Helen’s sedan, clutching the manila envelopes tightly against her chest like a shield. Detective Miller immediately drew her service weapon, dropping into a tactical stance beside the driver's side door of the patrol car parked nearby.
“Stop right there! Identify yourself!” Miller shouted, her voice echoing off the concrete walls with absolute authority.
The engine of the black unmarked SUV rumbled with a deep, menacing hum. A man stepped out from behind the driver’s door, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in a municipal impound facility. His hair was iron-grey, combed back with military precision, and his face remained cast in deep shadow beneath the glare of the overhead lights. He raised one hand slowly, palm outward, not in surrender, but as a gesture demanding calm.
“Put the gun away, Detective Miller,” the man said, his voice smooth, resonant, and carrying the unmistakable cadence of someone accustomed to absolute obedience.
“You’re swimming in waters that dried up a decade ago. Bringing civilian personnel into a classified retrieval zone violates three separate federal security mandates.”
Miller kept her weapon firmly trained on his chest.
“I don't care about your mandates, Director. This is an active domestic assault investigation involving local jurisdiction. Step away from the vehicle or I will place you under arrest for obstruction.”
The man let out a short, humorless chuckle. He took two measured steps forward, the polished leather of his shoes clicking sharply against the concrete. He glanced past Miller, his cold eyes locking onto Maya standing shivering beside Helen’s car in her burgundy sweatshirt.
“Maya,” he said softly, using a tone that was entirely too familiar for a stranger.
“Your mother played her part to the very end. She was instructed to provoke you tonight, to push your psychological thresholds to the absolute breaking point, just to see if your conditioning would finally crack after all these years.”
Maya felt the floor drop out from beneath her feet. The manila envelopes slipped from her numb fingers, scattering across the oily concrete.
“What are you talking about?” she choked out, her voice trembling violently.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Director Vance,” the man replied smoothly, closing the distance between them while keeping a wary eye on Miller’s drawn firearm.
“And I am the man who authorized your placement in Helen’s custody twenty-two years ago. You were never her daughter, Maya. You were the final surviving subject of Project Chimera—an experimental behavioral protocol designed to test whether human empathy could be systematically eradicated and replaced with tactical compliance.”
Miller’s eyes widened in horror as she processed the admission.
“You used a child as a lab rat in a domestic simulation?”
“We saved her from a collapsing system,” Vance corrected coldly, his gaze never leaving Maya’s horrified face.
“And now that the facility’s secure servers have been accessed tonight, the protocol requires immediate termination of the simulation phase. Which means Helen’s arrest wasn't an accident... it was the trigger for the extraction team currently surrounding this building.”

Before Miller could shout a warning, the sound of breaking glass echoed from the ceiling catwalks high above them. Three black-clad figures dropped silently from the darkness, their rappelling ropes hissing through the air as they landed in a tactical formation directly behind Detective Miller.
