Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Accusation

Red and blue emergency lights washed across the living room walls in rhythmic, blinding pulses. Maya stood frozen near the hallway entrance, her dark hair pulled back into a tight updo that felt like a vise against her scalp. She wore a stained burgundy sweatshirt and loose grey sweatpants, her knuckles white as she gripped a heavy wooden baseball bat. Across the room, a uniformed police officer firmly guided Helen toward the front door. Helen’s short grey hair was disheveled, a teal cardigan hung loosely over her beige shirt, and dark bruises bloomed across her left cheekbone. Steel handcuffs bit cruelly into her aged wrists.
Maya’s breath came in ragged, furious gasps. She raised the bat slightly, her voice shaking with adrenaline and uncontainable rage.
“Why is my mother in cuffs?”
Maya shouted, taking a sharp step forward as the flashing lights caught the heavy wood of the bat.
“She hit me.”
Helen stopped instantly, her body rigid with a mixture of exhaustion and bitter defiance. She turned her head toward the investigator, a sharp-eyed woman with blonde hair neatly styled in a bun, wearing a practical olive jacket over a light shirt. Helen’s voice strained, carrying the weight of years of unspoken resentment.
“And they believed her.”
Helen hissed, her eyes locking onto her daughter with a chilling lack of warmth.
“She came at me first, I was protecting myself.”
Maya scoffed, her voice cracking as tears of frustration pricked her eyes.
“You’re lying! You always twist everything to make yourself the victim!”
The investigator stepped between them, her presence commanding absolute silence. She reached into her olive jacket and withdrew a gold police badge encased in a black leather folder, flashing it briefly before sliding it back into her pocket. With practiced efficiency, she pulled out a smartphone, tapping the screen to illuminate a high-resolution photograph displaying the dark, ugly bruises mapping across Helen’s face. She held the glowing screen up, studying the image intently under the harsh strobe of the emergency lights. She turned her gaze to Helen, her voice dropping to a low, firm register that brooked no argument.
“Parker, now preserve everything.”
The investigator turned completely toward Helen, her expression hardening into absolute granite while Maya stood trembling in the background, still clutching the baseball bat like a lifeline.
“From this moment on, you’re no longer in the record.”
May you like
Helen’s face drained of all color, her defiance instantly shattering into a mask of pure terror.
