Chapter 7

The first pale rays of morning light broke over the manicured lawns of Blacktie Estates, but there was no peace in the dawn. The heavy iron gates at the main entrance, usually guarded by private security and closed to the public, stood wide open. A convoy of unmarked federal vehicles and local police cruisers rolled up the long gravel driveway, their blue and red emergency lights flashing silently against the stately brick facade.
Inside the grand foyer, Julian stood near the marble pillar where Elena had been cowering just hours before. He had changed out of his formal tuxedo into a simple dark grey button-down shirt and black slacks, his neck tattoos fully visible. He held a cup of black coffee in one hand, watching calmly as federal agents in tactical gear poured through the front doors, securing the perimeter with quiet, efficient precision.
Elena walked down the grand staircase, wearing her own coat over her civilian clothes, her belongings packed into a small canvas duffel bag. She paused on the landing, looking down at the dramatic scene unfolding below. Julian looked up and offered a reassuring nod, signaling that the worst of the immediate danger had passed.
“Mr. Vance?” A federal agent in a crisp dark suit approached Julian, flashing an identification badge. “Agent Miller, federal financial crimes unit. We’ve secured the master accounts and taken custody of Arthur Vance and Camilla Thorne in the penthouse suite.”
“Thank you, Agent,” Julian replied, shaking the man’s hand firmly. “You’ll find all the digital architecture mirrored on the drives in the basement security office. Every shell company, every falsified labor record, and every financial slush fund is cataloged there.”
“Your cooperation has significantly expedited this investigation, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller noted, looking around the opulent hallway with mild disdain. “It’s rare for someone in your position to dismantle their own family legacy from the inside.”
“It wasn't a legacy,” Julian said quietly, his eyes fixed on the crystal chandelier overhead. “It was a cage built on the backs of people who had no voice. It needed to be torn down to the foundation.”
As if on cue, two federal officers escorted Camilla down the staircase. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and her expensive designer heels clicked sharply against the marble steps, but her posture remained rigid with arrogant defiance. As she passed Julian, she stopped, her cold blue eyes flashing with pure hatred.

“You think you’ve won, Julian?” she sneered, her voice low enough for only him to hear. “You’re a Vance. Your blood is just as dirty as ours. When the dust settles, you’ll have nothing left, just like the beggars you’re trying to save.”
Julian didn't raise his voice or show a flicker of anger. He looked down at her with a profound, unshakeable pity. “I’d rather have nothing and be free, Camilla, than live every day trapped inside the golden prison you built for yourself.”
