Chapter 10

The federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan was surrounded by a dense pack of reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers as the high-profile trial of United States v. Thorne-Vance Enterprises officially commenced. Inside the massive courtroom, the air was thick with tension and the rustle of expensive legal briefs.

Arthur Vance sat at the defense table, looking significantly older and frailer than he had on the night of the raid. His black tuxedo had been replaced by a standard charcoal business suit, and his hands trembled slightly as he whispered with his lead defense attorney. A few seats down, Camilla sat rigidly upright, her long red hair pulled back into a severe, elegant knot. She wore a tailored navy blue blazer, her expression a mask of cold, unyielding defiance. She refused to look toward the gallery where Julian and Elena sat quietly in the front row.

The Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance—no relation to the defendants, despite the shared surname—adjusted her glasses and looked down from the elevated bench with a stern, unflinching gaze.

“The court has reviewed the supplementary evidence submitted by the federal prosecutor’s office, alongside the comprehensive financial audits provided by the primary whistleblower,” Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing clearly through the vaulted courtroom. “The defense motion to suppress the digital server logs obtained from the Blacktie Estates security terminal is hereby denied. The records demonstrate a systematic, multi-year pattern of labor fraud, intimidation, and financial concealment.”

A low murmur rippled through the gallery. Camilla’s defense attorney jumped to his feet, objecting vehemently. “Your Honor, those records were acquired through an unauthorized internal breach by Mr. Julian Vance, an estranged family member with a documented history of civil disobedience. They constitute tainted fruit from an illegal seizure!”

“Mr. Vance was a co-owner and voting shareholder with direct legal authorization to access corporate infrastructure,” Judge Vance countered smoothly, her gaze shifting sharply toward the defense table. “Furthermore, the federal investigators independently verified every data point on those drives within forty-eight hours of receipt. The objection is overruled.”

Camilla finally turned her head, fixing her piercing blue eyes directly on Julian across the courtroom aisle. Her micro-expression of absolute betrayal and burning hatred was unmistakable. She mouthed a single silent word—*traitor*—before turning back to face the judge.

Julian didn't blink or look away. He met her gaze with absolute, unshakeable calm. He had crossed the Rubicon, and there was no turning back. The ancient regime of intimidation and silence was dying in this courtroom, dismantled piece by piece by the very system it had manipulated for decades.
