Chapter 12

As the trial entered its second week, the defense’s carefully constructed facade began to disintegrate under the sheer volume of unassailable financial and testimonial evidence. Day after day, former domestic workers, disgraced accountants, and disgruntled estate managers took the stand, each adding another brick to the insurmountable wall of evidence against Arthur Vance and Camilla Thorne.
Realizing that legal maneuvering could no longer save them, the defense strategy shifted toward damage control and desperate scapegoating. During a recess in the courthouse corridor, Camilla cornered Julian near the tall arched windows overlooking the bustling city streets.
“You’re destroying everything our family built over three generations, Julian,” Camilla hissed, her voice vibrating with restrained fury. Her tailored blazer was still pristine, but the cracks in her composure were finally showing through. “When the dust settles on this circus, what do you think you’ll have left? A rented office in an industrial district, surrounded by people who only use you for protection?”
Julian turned slowly to face her, his hands tucked casually into his slacks. He looked down at her with a heavy, sorrowful gaze. “You still don't understand, do you, Camilla? You think legacy is measured by bank accounts, square footage, and how many people you can force to cower against a marble wall. That’s not a legacy. That’s a cage.”
“It’s power,” Camilla snapped, stepping closer, her blue eyes flashing dangerously. “And power is the only thing that keeps people like us safe from the wolves outside.”
“The only wolves in this story were the ones living inside the house,” Julian replied quietly. “And the gate is finally unlocked.”
Before Camilla could retort, Marcus Vance walked down the corridor toward them, carrying a thick manila folder. He didn't look at Camilla; instead, he stopped directly in front of Julian, his expression grim and resolute.
“The board just convened an emergency session in absentia,” Marcus said quietly, addressing Julian. “They’ve unanimously voted to strip Arthur of his executive chairmanship and void all active trusts linked to Camilla’s shipping conglomerates. The corporate assets are being transferred to a court-appointed receiver.”
Camilla’s breath hitched, her face turning pale as the final pillar of her empire collapsed around her. “You betrayed us, Marcus. You were our legal counsel for thirty years!”

“I was an accomplice for thirty years, Camilla,” Marcus corrected her without a trace of emotion. “There is a distinct difference. One is a career; the other is a crime.”
With that, Marcus handed the folder to Julian and walked away down the corridor, leaving Camilla standing alone in the grand hallway of the federal courthouse—isolated, defeated, and stripped of the untouchable status she had weaponized for so long.
