Chapter 8 - A Name That Wasn't Hers

Chloe stared down at the open passport in disbelief. The face looking back at her from the laminated photograph was undeniably her own, down to the small birthmark near her left collarbone. But the name printed in bold gold lettering read Elena Vance, born in Zurich, Switzerland, not Chloe Miller from Ohio.

Footsteps rushed down the hallway outside her bedroom door, moving far too fast to belong to Mark or Martha. Before Chloe could snap the lockbox shut, the door swung open wide, revealing a young male police officer with his flashlight drawn and pointed directly at her chest.

"Don't move! Keep your hands where I can see them!" the officer commanded, his voice sharp and steady.

Chloe froze, her hands hovering above the open lockbox, the passport and cash fully exposed in the dim light. Downstairs, Martha’s fake fainting spell had instantly transformed into a piercing shriek of absolute rage.

"She planted those! That girl is a thief and a fraud!" Martha’s voice echoed up the stairwell, hysterical and venomous. "Arrest her! She stole everything from our family!"

The officer stepped forward, holstering his weapon as he looked down at the incriminating contents of the lockbox on the floor. His expression hardened into professional disapproval. "Looks like you’ve got some explaining to do, miss. Step away from the furniture and turn around."

Chloe opened her mouth to speak, to tell them about the abuse, the lies, the forged deeds, but the words caught in her throat. Who would believe a twenty-five-year-old girl trapped in a house of professional liars?
