Chapter 11 - The Passenger in the Black Sedan

The rear door of the black sedan swung open silently from the inside, revealing a dark, leather-lined interior bathed in the soft glow of a dashboard screen. A man’s voice, smooth and controlled, cut through the distant wail of police sirens.

"Get in before they sweep the alley, Elena," the man said.

Chloe froze, her bare feet aching against the cold asphalt, her arms bruised and bleeding from her fall through the oak tree. She clutched the passport and lockbox to her chest like a shield. "Who are you? How do you know that name?"

"I know a lot more than that," the man replied calmly, turning his head slightly so the amber streetlamp illuminated his profile. He had striking green eyes and a sharp jawline—the exact face of the man standing beside Martha in the faded photograph from the mahogany desk. "Your mother didn't die in that fire, Chloe. And the people in that house aren't your family."

A wave of dizziness washed over Chloe. Every foundation of her life was crumbling into dust before her eyes. Down the alley, the muffled shouts of police officers echoed around the corner of the fence. Time had run out.

Without another word, Chloe scrambled into the back seat of the sedan, pulling her bruised legs inside just as the heavy door slammed shut with a muffled, secure thud.

The car glided forward smoothly into the labyrinth of industrial backstreets, accelerating away from the burning house just as two police cruisers rounded the corner with horns blaring.
