Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Distance

"Mark! Get down here right now!" Martha’s voice shattered the tense atmosphere of the upstairs bedroom, echoing up the stairwell with a frantic, breathless urgency that sent a shriek of adrenaline through the house.
Mark spun around, abandoning his interrogation, and bolted out the door without a backward glance. Chloe slid off the bed, ignoring the cold floorboards against her bare feet, and crept stealthily to the doorway. Peering down into the dim hallway, she saw Martha leaning heavily against the banister, her blonde updo half-unraveled, clutching a crumpled newspaper to her chest as if it were a shield.
"They found the safe deposit box at the downtown branch," Martha gasped, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. "Someone drilled it open this morning, Mark. Everything is gone."
Mark stopped midway down the stairs, his broad shoulders tensing under the grey t-shirt. "Who had the second key?" he growled, turning slowly to fix his mother with a glare of pure venom. "You said you kept both keys locked in the kitchen safe!"
"I did!" Martha shrieked, her restrained composure completely shattering. "I haven't touched that box in ten years!"
Hidden in the shadows at the top of the stairs, Chloe’s hand instinctively brushed against the heavy brass key still tucked safely inside the pocket of her camisole. A cold realization washed over her. The key she had found by her door hadn't been left there by accident; someone was framing her for a theft she hadn't committed—or perhaps someone was trying to help her uncover the truth before Martha and Mark could silence her forever.

Suddenly, the wail of approaching police sirens cut through the morning air, growing louder and closer with every second. Red and blue lights began to flash wildly through the frosted front windows, painting the hallway in erratic, accusing strokes.
