Chapter 14 - The Convergence at the Docks

The heavy fog rolling off the dark river shrouded the abandoned shipping containers in an eerie, ghostly twilight. Julian’s black sedan cut its headlights a hundred yards back, coasting silently onto the cracked concrete of Pier 44. The air smelled of rusted iron, damp seaweed, and impending violence.
Chloe checked her reflection in the dark window, squaring her shoulders despite the dull ache in her bruised ribs. She was no longer the helpless girl cowering in the grey and white bed.
"Stay in the car, Chloe," Julian whispered, reaching into his coat to pull out a heavy, matte-black firearm. "This ends tonight, one way or another."
"No," Chloe said, opening her door before he could stop her. "They’re waiting for me. It’s my name on that passport, and it’s my family’s legacy they stole."
As they stepped out onto the damp pavement, the screech of industrial hinges echoed from the cavernous warehouse ahead. Two figures stepped out from the shadows of a towering stack of shipping crates—Martha, still wearing her stained pink silk robe beneath a heavy trench coat, and Mark, holding a heavy metal crowbar with white knuckles.
"Well, well. Look who decided to show up for the final accounting," Mark sneered, his voice cutting through the damp river wind.
Martha stepped forward, her face twisted in a mask of pure hatred. "You should have stayed in that bed, you ungrateful little bitch!"

Suddenly, the red and blue flash of police cruisers flooded the dockyards from all sides, trapping Mark and Martha between the water and the law.
