Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Hallway

The heavy slam of the bedroom door echoed down the narrow hallway, vibrating through the thin drywall of the suburban house. Chloe sat shivering on the edge of the grey and white bed, rubbing her bruised arm where Martha’s fingers had left angry red prints. Tears finally spilled over her lashes, hot and silent, but she dared not make a sound. Downstairs, the heavy thud of heavy boots signaled Mark pacing across the kitchen linoleum.

"She’s hiding something, Mark," Martha’s voice drifted up through the floor vents, sharp and metallic. "I saw her looking at the deed yesterday."

Chloe’s breath hitched. She hadn't been looking at the house deed; she had been looking for her mother’s birth certificate, the only document that might explain why she was trapped in this nightmare. Mark muttered something unintelligible in response, his deep voice muffled by the ceilingboards. Then came a sharp clatter of metal against ceramic, followed by a sudden, chilling silence.

Creeping silently across the cold floor, Chloe pressed her ear against the warped wooden door. Her bare feet touched something hard near the threshold—a heavy brass key that had definitely not been there the night before. She picked it up slowly, her fingers brushing the cold metal. It was notched with a strange, asymmetrical pattern.

Downstairs, a car engine roared to life in the driveway. Through the sheer lace curtains of her bedroom window, Chloe watched Martha’s vintage sedan back out aggressively, spraying gravel across the unkempt lawn. Mark remained inside, his shadow pacing back and forth past the frosted glass of the kitchen door.

Chloe looked down at the brass key in her palm, then toward the antique mahogany desk tucked away in the corner of her room—a desk that had been locked shut for as long as she could remember. Her hands shook as she approached the heavy furniture, inserting the key into the brass escutcheon with a soft, ominous click.
