Chapter 4: The Brother's Shadow

Marcus Sterling, thirty-eight, adjusted the cuffs of his expensive charcoal suit, looking down at Emily with amused contempt. His dark hair was slicked back, and his sharp, clean-shaven jawline bore a striking, unfortunate resemblance to Daniel’s, though Marcus possessed none of his brother’s passive hesitation. Marcus was the attack dog of the family, the one who handled the dirty legal maneuvering and intimidation tactics behind the scenes.

“Running away so soon, sister-in-law?” Marcus asked smoothly, his voice echoing in the concrete emptiness of the garage. “Mother hates rude guests who leave before dessert.”

Emily snatched her keys off the floor and scrambled backward on the concrete, keeping the cracked smartphone clutched tightly in her right hand like a weapon.

“Stay away from me, Marcus,” Emily warned, her voice trembling but fierce. “I know what you all did to Arthur. And I know what happened to Sarah.”

Marcus chuckled, a low, arrogant sound that sent a shiver down Emily’s spine. He crouched down to her eye level, ignoring the dust on the floor, and leaned in close enough for Emily to smell his expensive cologne mixed with the scent of stale cigar smoke.

“Sarah was reckless,” Marcus whispered coldly. “She thought she could blackmail our father with fabricated nonsense about fleet maintenance logs. And Arthur? Well, Arthur’s heart simply gave out under the immense stress of realizing his oldest son was a liability to the dynasty. It’s a tragedy, really. People die of stress every single day.”

Before Marcus could reach out to grab her, Daniel rounded the corner of the service entrance, breathing heavily, his face flushed with exertion.

“Marcus, stop,” Daniel said, stepping between his brother and Emily. Despite his earlier compliance, a flicker of protectiveness seemed to spark in Daniel’s eyes. “Don’t touch her.”

Marcus sneered, standing back up to tower over Daniel. “Step aside, little brother. You’ve already proven you don’t have the stomach to handle our family’s survival. If Mother wants her contained, she gets contained. Hand me the phone, Emily, and maybe we’ll let you pack a bag before we send you to Aunt Beatrice’s estate in the Catskills—indefinitely.”

Emily used Daniel’s momentary intervention to scramble to her feet. She backed away toward her sedan, her thumb desperately swiping at the cracked screen of her phone, trying to upload the video file to an external secure cloud service she shared with her estranged brother, a corporate investigator living across the country.

“Upload progress: 43%,” the small text on the screen read.

“She’s sending it!” Marcus yelled, his face twisting into genuine rage as he lunged forward.

Emily dove behind her car just as Marcus slammed his hand down onto the hood. Daniel grabbed Marcus’s arm, holding him back with surprising force, the two brothers wrestling violently against the vehicle’s bodywork.

“Daniel, you idiot! Let go of me!” Marcus roared, throwing a punch that caught Daniel squarely on the jaw.

Emily didn't wait to see who won the scuffle. She unlocked her car door with the key fob, jumped into the driver's seat, and slammed the door shut, locking it instantly. The progress bar flashed on her phone screen: “Upload complete.” A wave of profound relief washed over her. The evidence was safe.

She slammed her foot down on the gas pedal, spinning the tires against the concrete as she rocketed toward the garage exit ramp, leaving Marcus screaming curses in her rearview mirror.
