Chapter 12: The Subterranean Escape

The heavy oak parlor doors burst open with a resounding crash, slamming against the interior wall. Marcus stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the empty space with immediate, violent suspicion. The parlor was dead silent. The heavy velvet drapes hung undisturbed over the French windows, and the Persian rug lay flat across the polished floor.
Marcus strode across the room, muttering curses under his breath, completely unaware that Emily had already vanished into the hidden passage behind the fireplace.
Deep beneath the Sterling estate, Emily descended the damp stone steps into the absolute darkness of the Prohibition-era tunnels. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth, aged stone, and centuries of hidden family secrets. She navigated the narrow corridor by sliding her hand along the rough stone wall, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. In her right hand, she gripped Elena’s flash drive like a lifeline.
She could still hear the faint, muffled sounds of Marcus shouting overhead, searching the empty parlor in a blind rage. They would realize she was gone soon enough, and once they discovered the secret passage behind the fireplace, the hunt would resume with lethal intensity.
She pressed forward, her boots splashing softly in the shallow puddles of water pooling along the stone floor of the drainage tunnel. The tunnel stretched on endlessly, illuminated only by faint beams of pale daylight filtering down through occasional rusted iron grates set into the lawn far above her.
As she rounded a sharp curve in the tunnel, a beam of light suddenly cut through the darkness ahead. Emily froze, pressing her back flat against the damp stone wall, holding her breath.
Footsteps echoed softly ahead of her—slow, heavy, and deliberate.
A figure emerged from the shadows around the bend, holding a small flashlight. As the light flickered upward, Emily gasped softly. It wasn't Marcus. It was Daniel.
He stopped instantly when he saw her standing in the tunnel, his dark polo shirt stained with dirt, his face drawn and exhausted. He lowered the flashlight, looking at her with a profound, aching sadness that seemed completely stripped of his usual passive obedience.
“Daniel,” Emily whispered, her voice tight with fear as she gripped a loose stone from the tunnel wall in her free hand. “Did Marcus send you to hunt me down in the dark?”
Daniel slowly shook his head, holding his empty hands up palms-up to show he was unarmed. He took a hesitant step closer, his voice dropping into a raspy, broken whisper.
“No, Emily. Marcus is searching the north wing. I came down here because I knew about this tunnel. Arthur showed it to me when I was a boy,” Daniel said, his eyes swimming with unshed tears. “I knew you’d head this way if Elena helped you.”
“Why are you here, Daniel?” Emily challenged, her voice trembling with righteous anger. “To stop me? To take the flash drive back to your mother? Are you going to pretend you didn't know what they did to Sarah? Are you going to pretend you didn't know they murdered your own father?”
Daniel flinched as if he had been physically struck. He dropped his gaze to the damp stone floor, his shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs.
“I knew,” Daniel whispered, the confession finally breaking free after years of suffocating silence. “I didn't pull the trigger on Sarah’s car. I didn't poison my father’s medicine. But I stayed silent. I traded my soul for the family name, the money, and my mother’s approval. I let them destroy every woman who ever threatened their empire.”
Emily stared at her husband, the anger in her chest giving way to a profound, hollow pity. He wasn't a monster like Marcus or Margaret; he was a coward who had allowed monsters to consume him from the inside out.
“It’s not too late, Daniel,” Emily said softly, holding out her hand. “Help me get to the highway. Help me bring this drive to David. You can finally do the right thing.”

Daniel looked up slowly, meeting her eyes with a tragic, resolute expression. Before he could answer, the distant sound of shouting echoed down the stone tunnel from behind them.
“Daniel! Where the hell are you? She’s not in the north wing!” Marcus’s furious voice reverberated through the damp air, growing closer by the second.
