Chapter 2: The Echo of Murder

The revelation hung in the air like poison, suffocating and absolute. Emily stared at Daniel, waiting for him to deny it, waiting for him to look shocked, angry, or confused. Instead, Daniel’s gaze dropped back to the polished floorboards, his silence serving as a damning confession. Margaret, recovering swiftly from her momentary surprise, adjusted the lapels of her gold tweed suit with chilling composure. The aggressive dominance in her posture returned, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she sized up Emily.
“You shouldn’t have watched that,” Margaret said smoothly, her voice devoid of any warmth or remorse. “Arthur was old, confused, and prone to wild delusions in his final days. It is tragic that you are choosing to believe the ramblings of a dying, senile man over your own family.”
Emily clutched the cracked smartphone tightly against her chest, the sharp edges pressing into her palm. The physical pain of the slap on her cheek felt distant now, completely overshadowed by the freezing realization of what kind of monsters she had been living with for the past three years.
“He wasn't confused,” Emily said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. “He knew exactly what he was saying. Sarah didn't have a normal car crash. You killed her, didn't you? Both of you.”
Daniel flinched slightly at the mention of his first wife, but he still remained silent, paralyzed by his mother’s overwhelming control. Margaret scoffed softly, stepping forward with a slow, predatory grace that made Emily’s skin crawl.
“Be very careful what you accuse us of, Emily,” Margaret warned, her tone dropping into a dangerous whisper. “You are currently standing in a house where you possess nothing. Your name is on no deeds, no accounts, and no trust funds. If you walk out that door right now claiming absurdities about tampered brakes, no one will believe you. You will be destroyed legally, financially, and socially before the sun sets.”
Emily glared at her mother-in-law, refusing to back down another inch. She knew Margaret possessed the power, the lawyers, and the ruthless cunning to crush anyone who stood in her way. But seeing that video changed everything. It meant Arthur hadn't died of natural heart failure as the medical examiner had officially ruled; he had been murdered because he discovered the truth about Sarah’s death. And Emily knew, with terrifying certainty, that she was next on their list.
“You think your money and your lawyers can hide what you did?” Emily challenged, stepping back toward the pantry exit. “I backed up that video to the cloud the second Arthur sent it to me. It’s already sitting in a secure server that you can’t touch.”
Margaret’s facade cracked for a split second, a flash of genuine panic crossing her eyes before she masked it with a menacing smile.

“Prove it,” Margaret hissed.
Emily spun around and sprinted toward the back hallway, but before she could reach the heavy oak door, Daniel moved with terrifying speed, blocking her path and grabbing her wrist with a grip like iron.
