Chapter 3: The Grip of Betrayal

Emily struggled against Daniel’s grip, twisting her wrist in a desperate attempt to break free, but his fingers held fast. He wasn't aggressive in his movements, but his strength was absolute, born of the athletic routine he maintained and the chilling compliance he offered his mother.

“Let me go, Daniel!” Emily hissed, her voice a mix of fury and rising panic. “Are you really going to help her lock me up or worse? Look at me! I’m your wife!”

Daniel looked down at her, his expression a tangled mess of reluctance, fear, and deep-seated guilt. He didn't loosen his hold, but his voice came out as a low, miserable murmur meant only for her ears.

“Just stop fighting, Emily,” Daniel pleaded quietly, his eyes begging her to understand his cowardice. “If you fight her, she won’t just ruin you. She’ll destroy everything. Just give me the phone.”

“Never,” Emily spat, using her free hand to strike blindly at his chest.

Margaret strolled into the hallway behind them, her gold tweed suit rustling softly with every calculated step. She looked at the struggling couple with the detached interest of an aristocrat observing insects in a laboratory.

“Take the phone from her, Daniel,” Margaret commanded, her tone leaving zero room for argument. “We cannot afford loose ends. Not now, when the corporate merger is just three days away from final approval.”

Emily’s heart hammered against her ribs. The corporate merger—that was it. Arthur had threatened to expose them before the board vote, and they had silenced him. Now, Emily possessed the evidence that could tear down the entire Sterling empire, and they were willing to do whatever it took to keep her quiet. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Emily stomped down hard on Daniel’s foot with the heel of her boot.

Daniel winced and instinctively loosened his grip. It was the only opening Emily needed. She wrenched her wrist free, turned on her heel, and bolted down the narrow service corridor toward the staff exit leading to the subterranean garage.

“Stop her!” Margaret screamed behind her, the veneer of aristocratic calm completely shattering into shrill panic.

Footsteps echoed heavily on the tile floors as Daniel gave chase. Emily ran as fast as her legs could carry her, her breathing coming in sharp, ragged gasps. The service corridor was dimly lit, shadows stretching long and menacing along the walls. She reached the heavy metal fire door at the end of the hall, slammed her weight against the panic bar, and spilled out into the cool, damp air of the underground parking garage.

The sprawling garage was cavernous and poorly lit, housing several luxury vehicles under flickering fluorescent tubes. Emily scanned the rows of cars frantically, searching for her own old sedan parked near the exit ramp. She fished frantically in her pocket for her car keys, her fingers shaking so violently she dropped them onto the concrete with a metallic clatter. As she dropped to her knees to grab them, a pair of polished leather shoes stepped directly into her field of vision. She slowly raised her eyes upward, dread pooling in her stomach, to find her brother-in-law, Marcus, standing over her with a cold, mocking grin.
