Chapter 10: The Re-Imprisonment

“Come along quietly, Emily,” Margaret whispered, her grip on Emily’s arm surprisingly tight and unyielding as she steered her toward the back door of the luxury sedan. “You’ve caused quite enough public embarrassment for one morning.”

Emily tried to dig her boots into the asphalt, pulling back with all her remaining strength, but two burly security guards had materialized from the front vehicle, grabbing her arms and lifting her off her feet with effortless cruelty.

“Help me! She’s taking me back to die!” Emily screamed at the state trooper, tears streaming down her bruised face.

The trooper looked away, avoiding her desperate gaze, deliberately choosing to look down at his notepad as the heavy car door slammed shut, cutting off her voice.

Inside the air-conditioned interior of the sedan, the atmosphere was suffocating. Margaret sat beside her with absolute, icy composure, adjusting the pearls around her neck as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. In the front passenger seat, Marcus climbed in, wiping a streak of dirt from his charcoal suit, his face dark and brooding. A few moments later, Daniel climbed into the driver’s seat, his face bruised on one cheek where Marcus had struck him, his eyes completely hollow and deadened.

Daniel started the engine without a word, putting the vehicle in drive and steering the car smoothly back toward the wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate.

“You’re monsters,” Emily whispered, her voice shaking with bitter exhaustion as she stared straight ahead at the plush leather headrest. “David has the video. The federal prosecutors already have the file. You can’t hide what you did anymore.”

Margaret turned her head slowly, looking at Emily with an expression of profound, chilling pity.

“My dear, naive Emily,” Margaret murmured smoothly. “Do you truly believe a file sent by a disgraced corporate investigator can overturn fifty years of political alliances, deep-pocketed legal teams, and institutional protection? By the time federal authorities finish cutting through our legal roadblocks, you will have signed over your estate shares, quietly divorced Daniel, and retired to a peaceful private clinic in Switzerland where no one will ever hear your voice again.”

Emily’s heart sank into an abyss of absolute despair. For a fleeting moment, she had believed justice was possible. She had believed Arthur’s sacrifice and Sarah’s memory would finally be vindicated. But sitting here in the opulent cage of the Sterling empire, surrounded by cowards, murderers, and corrupt enablers, she realized how hopelessly outmatched she was.

The sedan glided past the security gates, which swung open automatically, and pulled up to the grand front entrance of the Sterling mansion. The imposing marble pillars loomed over them like prison bars.

The car doors unlocked with a soft click. Marcus turned around from the front seat, looking back at Emily with a cold, triumphant smirk.

“Welcome home, sister-in-law,” Marcus said, reaching back to grab her arm and yank her out of the vehicle.

Emily didn't fight back this time. Her energy was completely spent, her body aching from head to toe. As Marcus hauled her up the marble steps and through the grand double doors into the opulent foyer, she looked over at Daniel. He was staring down at the polished floorboards once again, refusing to meet her eyes, a perpetual prisoner of his mother’s ruthless dynasty.

Marcus shoved Emily roughly into the grand parlor, locking the heavy oak doors from the outside with a deafening click.

Emily stumbled forward, catching herself on the edge of a mahogany table. She looked around the empty, cavernous room, realizing she was completely alone, utterly defeated, and trapped inside the lion’s den.

As she stared blankly at the antique fireplace, a faint, metallic scraping sound echoed from behind the heavy velvet drapes covering the tall French windows leading to the private garden.

Emily slowly froze, holding her breath as the drapes parted a fraction of an inch, revealing a pair of familiar eyes watching her intently from the glass.
