Chapter 3: The Hallway of Silence

Margaret Vance rushed to her son’s side, her haughty composure shattering into desperate, shrieking fury. ""Turn those screens off! Turn them off immediately! Marcus, where are the security guards?""

Two uniformed private security officers stepped into the aisle, but they did not approach Nora. They stood beside the doors, their hands resting on their belts, their eyes locked on Austin.

""Mr. Vance,"" the lead officer stated, his voice carrying clearly across the pews. ""Charleston Police Department units are already entering the main driveway based on the digital security alert triggered by the system.""

Candice threw her wedding bouquet onto the floorboards, tearing off her diamond engagement ring and hurling it directly at Austin’s chest.

""You used me,"" Candice wept, her voice shaking with rage. ""You used my family’s name, and you tried to frame an innocent little girl to cover your debts!""

Nora did not stay to watch the socialite empire cannibalize itself.

She adjusted Daisy in her arms, wrapping her warm silk shawl around the shivering child. ""Cover your ears, Daisy-bug,"" Nora murmured gently. ""We’re going home.""

Nora walked down the long white aisle, stepping over the scattered rose petals and the broken pieces of the walnut frame.

The guests parted before her like water, bowing their heads in embarrassed silence, unable to meet the gaze of the mother who had dismantled a dynasty with the push of a button.

Outside, the warm Charleston air smelled of salt marshes and blooming jasmine.

As Nora carried Daisy down the broad stone steps of the estate, four police cruisers with flashing blue lights roared up the gravel driveway, their sirens echoing through the ancient live oaks.

Nora stepped into her SUV, strapped Daisy securely into her booster seat, and climbed into the driver’s seat.

Daisy looked up with wide, tearful hazel eyes, her small hands clutching her denim collar. ""Mommy... are they going to put me in jail?""

Nora turned in her seat, taking both of Daisy’s small, cold hands into her warm palms, kissing each knuckle with infinite tenderness.

""Never, my sweet girl,"" Nora said, her voice steady as the ocean tide. ""You did nothing wrong. The bad man told a lie, but truth always wins in the light. You are safe. You are free. And Mommy will never let anyone hurt you.""
