Chapter 1: The Shattered Glass

The grand ballroom of the Palmer Hall Estate in Charleston was a cathedral of manufactured perfection.
Under ten crystal chandeliers, two hundred high-society guests in black-tie attire sat along a fifty-foot glossy white vinyl aisle flanked by cascading arches of white hydrangeas and English roses. At the altar stood Austin Vance, thirty-four, impeccably tailored in a midnight-black tuxedo, beside his pale blonde bride, Candice, whose hand-embroidered veil pooled across the marble riser.
Suddenly, the joyful melody of the string quartet was shattered by a violent, concussive crash.
Austin had grabbed a heavy walnut shadowbox frame containing the Vance family’s antique heirloom—the Star of Carolina diamond brooch—and smashed it with furious, premeditated force onto the glossy white floorboards right in front of six-year-old Daisy Nolan.
Splintered hardwood, broken crystal glass, and velvet lining exploded across the white runner.
""That is exactly what a filthy thief deserves to get!"" Austin roared, his face contorted in theatrical rage, pointing a shaking finger down at the trembling child.
Six-year-old Daisy stood frozen. She wore a denim jacket over a pastel rainbow tulle dress, a large pink satin bow pinned to her blonde hair. Her eyes were wide with pure, paralyzing terror as the shards of wood skidded against her white patent shoes.
""Mommy!"" Daisy’s voice tore from her throat, breaking into high, ragged sobs. ""Mommy, I didn't take it! I was just looking at the flowers!""
From the fourth row, Nora Nolan moved like a lightning strike.
At thirty-two, with vibrant auburn hair cascading over the shoulders of a sleeveless champagne silk gown, Nora did not hesitate. She dropped to her knees on the sharp debris, sweeping Daisy into her arms, pressing the weeping girl’s head firmly against her chest, shielding her with her entire body.
""I’ve got you, baby. Mommy is right here,"" Nora whispered fiercely, her eyes sweeping over Daisy’s hands to confirm the glass had not cut her skin.
Austin’s mother, Margaret Vance, stepped forward from the front pew, her champagne-taupe satin gown rustling heavily, three diamond bangles rattling on her wrist. She placed a possessive hand on her son's shoulder, glaring down at Nora and Daisy with icy aristocratic contempt.
""Enough of this disgraceful scene,"" Margaret announced to the room. ""The girl was caught red-handed near the gift table. Call the police and have this trash removed.""
Nora slowly stood up, holding Daisy firmly on her hip.
She did not cry. Her jaw was set with an ancient, terrifying composure. Her green eyes locked onto the corner of the vaulted ceiling, where a commercial-grade 4K dome CCTV security camera blinked with a steady, cobalt-blue recording light.
Nora turned her gaze to Austin, whose eyes flickered with a sudden, microscopic tremor of panic.
""You broke that frame on purpose, Austin,"" Nora said, her voice cutting through the silent ballroom like a freshly honed blade. ""And you will not put your crimes on my six-year-old child.""

""She had her hands in the velvet box!"" Austin yelled, his voice cracking. ""The whole room saw her!""
""I demand to see the CCTV footage right now!"" Nora commanded, her voice ringing off the crystal chandeliers with absolute, sovereign authority.
