Chapter 11: The First Unbroken Laugh

By May, the marshlands of Wadmalaw Island were alive with the vibrant green of new spartina grass and the sweet scent of wild honeysuckle.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Nora and Daisy walked over to Gabriel’s waterfront workshop.
Daisy was dressed in clean canvas overalls, holding her wooden dolphin in one hand and a paintbrush in the other.
Gabriel was putting the finishing touches on a sixteen-foot wooden sailing dory, its hull painted a brilliant seafoam green.
""Need a first mate, Gabriel,"" Daisy announced proudly, climbing onto a wooden step stool.
""Only if the first mate knows how to paint the name on the stern, Captain Daisy,"" Gabriel smiled, handing her a small jar of gold marine enamel.
With Gabriel’s large, steady hand guiding her small fingers, Daisy carefully painted the final gold letter onto the transom:
T-H-E U-N-B-R-O-K-E-N
When the paint was dry, Gabriel scooped Daisy up onto his shoulders, spinning her around the sawdust-scented shop while she squealed with pure, uninhibited joy.

Nora stood by the open barn doors, watching them with a full, radiant heart.
The memory of the shattered glass in Palmer Hall had completely lost its power. In its place was the smell of cedar, the sound of laughter, and the solid, unshakeable foundation of a home built on truth.
