Chapter 2: The Blue Eye on the Wall

The silence in Palmer Hall was suffocating.

Guests in diamonds and silk exchanged uneasy, darting glances. Candice, the bride, took a step back, her hands trembling as she lifted her veil from her pale face, looking at Austin with sudden, sharp suspicion.

""Austin..."" Candice whispered. ""What is she talking about?""

""She’s an unhinged guest trying to extort us, Candice!"" Austin stammered, his collar suddenly feeling like a noose. ""Mother, tell the venue manager to clear the room!""

""The venue manager doesn't control that optical feed, Austin,"" Nora said calmly, stepping forward with Daisy in her arms. ""I do.""

Margaret Vance scoffed, her lip curling. ""You? You’re a freelance guest who barely qualified for an invitation.""

""I am the Senior Managing Partner of Aegis Digital Forensics,"" Nora replied, her tone level and unshakeable. ""My firm was contracted by the Palmer Hall Trust six months ago to engineer and maintain the entire encrypted optical infrastructure of this historic property. Every camera in this hall transmits eight million pixels per second directly to an off-site cloud vault in Atlanta.""

Nora pulled her smartphone from her satin clutch. With three rapid taps, she mirrored her device onto the three eighty-inch digital seating monitors flanking the ballroom archway.

""Look at the screen, Austin,"" Nora commanded.

The monitors lit up with crystal-clear, high-definition 4K footage timestamped twelve minutes earlier.

The camera zoomed smoothly into the bridal prep hallway:

00:04:12: Austin Vance entered the empty hallway carrying the walnut shadowbox.

00:05:30: Austin used a pocket knife to pry open the velvet backing, slip the antique diamond brooch into his tuxedo inner lining, and replace it with a cubic zirconia dummy stone.

00:08:14: Austin walked to the altar, waited until Daisy walked past to admire the flower arch, and deliberately dropped the heavy box at her feet, kicking it to simulate an impact before shouting his accusation.

The ballroom erupted into gasps, shouts, and horrified whispers.

Austin’s face turned an ash-grey color of total, unrecoverable ruin. He stumbled backward into the floral arch, crushing the white hydrangeas, his breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps.

""You... you hacked the system..."" Austin choked out, clutching his chest.

""I didn't hack anything, Austin,"" Nora said, her voice echoing with devastating moral clarity. ""I just turned on the lights.""
