Chapter 8

"Thank you all for coming tonight," Clara announced, her voice echoing clearly across the vast, ornate room. "Unfortunately, an urgent family matter requires our immediate attention. Please enjoy the remaining food and drinks, and make use of the open bar. We are truly sorry for the abrupt end to the evening." With those graceful parting words, Clara turned and walked briskly toward the private bridal suite at the back of the venue, her long white train dragging slightly on the polished floor. Julian stood frozen for a second before following her, casting one apologetic glance back at Chloe, who remained rooted to the center stage. Slowly, the guests began to murmur among themselves, the initial shock giving way to polite, sympathetic chatter as people started gathering their coats and heading for the exits. The grand celebration had officially transformed into a quiet, post-storm wasteland of half-filled champagne flutes, melting ice sculptures, and scattered financial ruin.

Chloe sank down onto the edge of the stage, her dark purple dress pooling around her ankles as the weight of the evening finally crushed her spirit. She felt utterly exhausted, drained of every ounce of energy. The dramatic fall on the dance floor earlier that evening now felt like a prophetic omen of the total collapse that had just occurred. She pulled out her phone, dialing Marcus’s number out of sheer desperation, but it went straight to voicemail. She was entirely alone in the cavernous ballroom, save for a few caterers quietly clearing plates from the distant tables. The warm lighting of the chandeliers felt harsh now, exposing the fragile illusions they had all tried so hard to maintain. Yet, despite the disaster, a strange sense of relief washed over her. The secrets were out in the open. The terrible suspense of waiting for the other shoe to drop was finally over, leaving only the difficult, necessary work of picking up the shattered pieces.
