Chapter 6

Julian looked at the scattered financial documents, then at Clara’s tear-filled eyes, and finally at Chloe. The arrogant armor he usually wore had completely dissolved, leaving behind a man cornered by his own poor choices. He reached out, gently taking Clara’s cold hands, though she instinctively tried to pull away. "I didn't tell you because I was terrified of losing you," Julian confessed softly, every word heavy with genuine remorse. "When I met you, my life was a mess of bad investments and toxic partnerships. You brought light into a very dark world for me, Clara. I was an idiot coward who thought I could fix the financial bleeding on my own without dragging you down into the mud." Marcus stood nearby, arms crossed, watching the domestic drama unfold with detached professional interest. "Noble sentiment, Mr. Vance," Marcus interjected smoothly, "but nobility doesn't pay back the three hundred thousand dollars your former partner embezzled using your corporate signature."
Gasps rippled through the seated guests. Three hundred thousand dollars was a staggering sum, one that completely reframed the lavish wedding reception into an illusion built on borrowed capital and desperate optimism. Chloe looked down at her purple dress, feeling a profound wave of guilt for having introduced Julian to the world of high-stakes corporate consulting where this disaster had originated. "It was my fault," Chloe admitted aloud, stepping into the center of the stage. "I recommended the firm that audited his accounts. When things went wrong, I helped him hire Marcus to track the missing capital. We kept you out of it, Clara, because we wanted to hand you a clean slate as a wedding gift, not a federal subpoena." Clara looked between the two people she trusted most in the world, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she processed the sheer magnitude of their deception. The warmth of the chandeliers suddenly felt oppressive, like a spotlight on a stage where she was the only one kept in the dark.
