Chapter 4

Marcus cleared his throat gently, the sound amplified slightly by the acoustics of the vaulted ceiling, though the band had thankfully stopped playing their intermission jazz. "Pardon the intrusion," Marcus said, his voice deep, calm, and carrying an undeniable authority that immediately commanded the attention of the surrounding guests. "I hate to disrupt a joyous occasion, but this is a matter of urgent financial restitution concerning the bride and groom." Clara blinked in confusion, her smile faltering as she looked from the stranger to her new husband. Julian stepped forward, placing himself squarely between Marcus and Clara, his voice dropping into a dangerous, controlled register. "You have exactly five seconds to turn around and walk out those doors before I have security physically remove you from private property." The warmth of the ballroom seemed to evaporate instantly, replaced by a tense, chilling silence that settled heavily over the hundred-plus wedding guests who suddenly found themselves trapped in a real-life drama.
Chloe pushed her way past a cluster of bewildered groomsmen, her heels clicking sharply against the wooden floorboards as she rushed toward the stage. "Marcus, stop! This wasn't the agreement!" she called out, her voice cracking slightly under the immense strain. Marcus turned his head, looking at her with an expression of detached professional pity. "The agreement was terminated the moment your retainer bounced, Chloe. Besides, your dear friend Julian here deserves transparency on his wedding day, doesn't he?" Clara looked desperately between Julian and Chloe, the panic finally breaking through her denial. "What is going on here? Julian, who is this man? What does he mean by financial restitution?" Julian didn't answer immediately; his jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle twitched near his cheek. He realized in that fraction of a second that the anonymous threats hadn't come from a random stalker, but from the very web of secrets he and Chloe had woven together before the wedding preparations even began.
