Chapter 7

Clara closed her eyes for a long, agonizing moment, taking a deep, shuddering breath to steady her racing pulse. When she opened them again, the tears were gone, replaced by a chilling, resolute calm that startled both Julian and Chloe. She pulled her hands firmly out of Julian’s grasp and stepped away from the wedding cake, putting physical and emotional distance between herself and the chaos. "A wedding gift," Clara repeated softly, her voice devoid of inflection. "You thought lying to me, conspiring behind my back, and hiring private investigators while picking out floral arrangements was a gift." Julian swallowed hard, recognizing the dangerous precipice they were standing on. "Clara, please—" She raised a single hand, silencing him instantly. "No. Not another word of justification tonight. We are going to finish this conversation, but not here, not in front of people who came to celebrate a marriage that was apparently founded on a foundation of managed truths."

Marcus nodded respectfully, sensing that his unexpected appearance had achieved its intended, albeit disruptive, goal. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small business card, and placed it neatly on the edge of the stage. "My direct number is on the card, Mr. Vance. You have until Monday morning to settle the retainer balance and authorize the final asset recovery protocol, or these documents go straight to the federal prosecutor's office." With that parting warning, Marcus turned on his heel, retraced his steps across the wooden dance floor, and exited the ballroom, the heavy double doors swinging shut behind him with a soft, final thud. The silence that followed his departure was deafening. The band members stood awkwardly near their instruments, unsure whether to pack up or play a quiet exit tune. Clara turned to the stunned crowd of friends and family, offering a heartbreakingly brave, fragile smile that nearly broke Chloe’s heart.
