Chapter 2

The laughter of the reception faded into a distant murmur as Chloe excused herself, slipping quietly through the heavy oak doors and into the quiet sanctuary of the grand ballroom’s cloakroom. The air in the small, mirrored space felt cool against her flushed cheeks. She locked the door behind her, leaning back against the smooth wood to catch her breath. Her dark purple gown felt suddenly heavy, like a suit of armor she no longer had the strength to carry. Reaching into the secret pocket stitched into the lining of her dress, she pulled out her vibrating smartphone. The screen illuminated her anxious face, displaying another cold, unmerciful text message from the unknown number: "The dance floor was just the warmup, Chloe. Tell Julian the truth, or I will do it for you before the cake is cut." Her hands trembled violently as she stared at the glowing pixels. This wasn't a prank; it was a calculated extortion scheme orchestrated by someone who knew the darkest chapters of her past.
Footsteps echoed softly on the tiled floor outside the cloakroom, followed by a gentle knock. Clara’s cheerful voice filtered through the wood. "Chloe? Honey, are you okay in there? Everyone’s asking about you! We're about to cut the cake, and the maid of honor cannot be missing in action!" Panic flared in Chloe’s chest. She quickly tucked the phone away, splashed cold water on her face, and unlocked the door to reveal the radiant bride. Clara looked breathtaking, her eyes sparkling with genuine warmth and concern, completely oblivious to the ticking time bomb threatening her happiness. "I'm fine, Clara, just a little dizzy from the spin Julian gave me," Chloe lied smoothly, avoiding direct eye contact. Clara wrapped her in a warm, affectionate hug, whispering how glad she was to have her closest friend by her side. That simple act of kindness pierced through Chloe’s defenses, solidifying her inner vow to protect Clara at all costs, even if it meant confronting her own terrifying demons before the night officially came to an end.
