Chapter 8 - The Federal Trap

The high-definition monitors mounted against the wood-paneled wall flared with bright white light, casting an electronic glow across the ruined office. Instead of security camera footage, the screens displayed a live feed from a federal magistrate’s chambers downtown, accompanied by the scrolling text of multi-count indictments for corporate wire fraud, extortion, and premeditated murder.

Marcus whipped his head around, his gun wavering for a fraction of a second as he stared at the screen. "What is this?" he demanded, his professional composure finally cracking.

Victoria spun around, her face losing all its color beneath her high lace collar. "Turn that off!" she shrieked, lunging toward the desk to grab the keyboard.

Julian’s hand shot out with blinding speed, catching her wrist in a vice grip and shoving her backward against the bookshelf. "Don't touch it," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low. "My mother wasn't as fragile as you and Marcus assumed. She spent the last year of her life quietly working with federal investigators once she uncovered the offshore shell companies you two established."

The two hired thugs panicked, releasing Lily’s arm and making a frantic break for the shattered window. But before they could climb over the glass, the doorway behind them filled with armed federal marshals wearing tactical vests and holding service weapons at the ready.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" shouted the lead marshal, stepping into the room with absolute authority.

Marcus instinctively raised his firearm toward the marshals, but before his finger could even tighten on the trigger, a deafening crack echoed through the office. A specialized tactical round shattered the lamp directly above Marcus’s head, showering him in hot glass and plaster.

"Drop the weapon! Now!" the marshal bellowed.

Marcus hesitated for a single heartbeat, looking wildly between the federal agents, Victoria, and Julian, before slowly letting the pistol slip from his fingers. It clattered loudly against the floorboards.

The agents swarmed the room, pinning Marcus and the thugs to the ground in a blur of efficient movement. One of the female marshals immediately rushed over to Lily, kneeling down to gently hand the child her dropped crutch.

"You're safe now, sweetie," the marshal said softly, offering a reassuring smile.

Julian dropped to his knees, pulling Lily into a fierce, protective embrace as the emotional weight of the past twenty-four hours finally broke over him. Across the room, Victoria was handcuffed by two agents, her white wedding dress dragging through the broken glass as she was hauled toward the private elevator.

"You can't do this!" Victoria screamed, her voice echoing down the hallway as she was dragged away. "I am Mrs. Sterling!"
