Chapter 2 - The Hidden Vault

The heavy oak door of Julian’s downtown office clicked shut, sealing out the hum of evening traffic and the relentless ringing of his cell phone. Victoria had called forty-seven times in the last hour, her voicemails shifting rapidly from furious demands to desperate weeping. Julian ignored them all, setting his phone facedown on the mahogany desk. Lily sat quietly in the leather armchair by the window, her crutches leaning neatly against the armrest, her purple dress a stark reminder of the ruined ceremony.
Julian crouched beside her, brushing a stray curl from her forehead. "Are you alright, sweetheart?"
Lily nodded slowly, her large brown eyes reflecting the city lights outside. "Is it my fault, Daddy? Did I ruin everything by being there?"
"Never say that," Julian said firmly, his voice thick with emotion. "You are my world, Lily. Never let anyone make you feel like a burden."
He stood up and walked over to a seemingly solid wood paneling behind his desk. Pressing a sequence of buttons hidden within the hand-carved molding, a concealed wall safe swung open with a pneumatic hiss. Inside sat a heavy leather-bound ledger and a collection of vintage cassette tapes labeled in his late mother’s precise handwriting. He reached past them to retrieve a manila folder marked with Victoria’s full legal name—Victoria Sterling.
For months, his mother, the formidable matriarch known simply as Nana, had warned him about Victoria’s ambition. Nana had insisted that Victoria came from nothing, had fabricated her entire pedigree, and harbored a cold, calculated disdain for anyone with physical limitations. Julian had dismissed it as protective maternal paranoia, blaming generational friction. But the events of today cast a sinister light on his mother’s final warnings before her passing six months ago.
Julian pulled a thick stack of financial audits and legal correspondence from the folder. His eyes scanned the first page, and the blood drained entirely from his face. The documents detailed a series of covert wire transfers draining his personal trust accounts into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands—all authorized by a forged power of attorney bearing his own signature.
"Daddy?" Lily's small voice broke the heavy silence of the office. "Someone is outside the door."
May you like
Julian froze, listening intently. A soft, rhythmic scratching sound echoed against the frosted glass of the office entrance, followed by the faint click of a lock turning.
