Chapter 13 - The Final Stand

The metallic flash drive gleamed under the flickering emergency bulb hanging from the stone ceiling. Victor Sterling’s charming facade cracked instantly, his aristocratic features twisting into a mask of cold, calculating fury.

"You're bluffing," Victor hissed, taking a sharp step forward. "Nana didn't have access to the primary mainframe encryption keys before she passed."

"She didn't need them," Julian replied steadily, keeping his thumb resting lightly on the recessed activation button of the drive. "She built the system from scratch thirty years ago. She left a backdoor known only to her direct bloodline—me."

From the stairwell above came the sound of hurried footsteps, followed sharply by Lily’s frightened voice. "Daddy!"

Before Victor could react, a heavy thud echoed from the upper landing, and two men in tactical gear stumbled backward down the stone steps, grappling with a third figure clad in a familiar black blazer. It was Naomi. Somehow, she had managed to track Julian’s vehicle using the encrypted GPS beacon from her damaged camera equipment, bypassing the cell jammers entirely by utilizing a military-grade satellite band.

"Julian, look out!" Naomi screamed, shoving one of the guards away as she scrambled down the remaining steps, clutching a heavy iron fireplace poker.

Victor cursed under his breath, reaching quickly inside his overcoat for a concealed weapon, but Julian was faster. With explosive speed, Julian lunged forward, tackling his uncle hard against the damp stone wall. The heavy steel wrench slipped from Julian's pocket, clattering loudly against the steps as the two men locked in a desperate struggle for dominance.

"You ruin everything!" Victor choked out, his hands clawing fiercely at Julian’s throat as they tumbled toward the edge of the open stairwell landing.

Below them, the steep stone spiral dropped twenty feet into the darkness of the lower storage chamber. Lily appeared at the top of the stairs, clutching her crutches tightly, her wide eyes filled with sheer terror as she watched her father fight for his life against the ghost of the family past.

"Daddy, catch!" Lily shouted with remarkable presence of mind, sliding one of her aluminum crutches down the slippery stone steps like a javelin.

Julian anticipated the move, catching the base of the crutch mid-slide and using its rigid aluminum frame as a lethal lever against Victor’s collarbone. With a sharp twist, Julian pinned his uncle’s arm back, disarming him completely as the older man cried out in pain and slumped against the wall, defeated.
