Chapter 9 - The Power Outage

The candles lining the marble walls guttered and died all at once, their smoke curling up into the dark vaulted ceiling like ghostly wisps. A low, electronic hum echoed through the building as the main hotel generator kicked on with a heavy thud, bathing the hallway in the harsh, sterile glow of emergency backup lighting.
Lily let out a tiny gasp of fright, instinctively clutching her purple dress and leaning her full weight against her father’s leg.
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ve got you,” Marcus murmured, instantly scooping Lily up into his strong arms, letting her aluminum crutches clatter once more against the floor. He held her close, shielding her from the sudden chill in the air.
Nana adjusted her velvet shawl in her wheelchair, her sharp eyes scanning the darkened corridor without a hint of fear. “It seems the hotel management is finally realizing what kind of circus has been running in their ballroom tonight.”
Nurse Brenda stepped closer to the wheelchair, pulling a small flashlight from her pocket to illuminate the path forward. “Nana, the night air is getting too cold for your lungs. We need to get you back to the medical transport waiting downstairs.”
“Not yet, Brenda,” Nana commanded quietly, her gaze fixed on the shadows at the far end of the hallway. “We aren't leaving until the accounts are fully locked down.”
From the threshold of the ballroom, David slowly pulled himself up from the floor where Marcus had shoved him earlier. His expensive tuxedo was stained with spilled scotch, and his hair was wildly disheveled. He looked around the dimly lit room, realizing that the remaining wedding guests had quietly slipped away through the side exits, leaving him entirely alone with the ruined reception.
David staggered out into the hallway, his eyes wild and desperate as he looked at Marcus holding Lily.
“Marcus… please,” David choked out, taking a halting step forward. “You can’t ruin my life over this. I have a family! I have a mortgage! Claire tricked me! She swore you were signing off on the liquidity transfer!”
Marcus didn't even turn to look at him. He adjusted Lily in his arms, his voice flat and devoid of any mercy. “You had ten years of loyalty, David. You chose greed over basic human decency. The board will have all your corporate access revoked by morning.”
“You’re going to destroy me!” David shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria as he dropped to his knees on the cold marble floor. “Sterling Enterprises is my entire life! Without the firm, I’m nothing!”
“You should have thought of that before you helped try to erase my daughter from existence,” Marcus replied coldly.
Maya stepped past David, her camcorder still rolling, capturing his complete collapse in the harsh emergency lighting. “The audit trail is already uploaded to the federal server, David. There’s no undoing it now.”
Nana sighed, a sound heavy with exhaustion and profound disappointment. “Take him away, Nurse Brenda. The sight of a grown man weeping over stolen money gives me a headache.”
Brenda nodded, stepping over to the phone on the wall to call hotel security to escort the broken best man off the premises.
Marcus turned to his mother, his expression softening as he looked down at the frail matriarch in the wheelchair. “Mother, you shouldn't have risked your health coming out here tonight. You should be resting.”
“I couldn't rest, Marcus,” Nana replied softly, reaching out to gently touch Lily’s small hand where she rested against her father’s shoulder. “Not when I knew the kind of viper you were about to marry. I watched you build this empire, but I also watched you get so busy chasing success that you almost let someone destroy the only thing that truly matters.”
Lily looked down at her grandmother, a small, tentative smile touching the corners of her mouth. “Thank you, Nana.”
“Always, my brave girl,” Nana whispered.

Suddenly, the elevator bell chimed softly down the hall, and the doors slid open to reveal a solitary figure standing inside, holding a thick manila envelope stamped with urgent federal seals.
