Chapter 11 - The Second Guest List

The hotel manager’s chest heaved as he thrust the stack of printed papers toward Marcus. The pages were covered in neat, typed columns, stamped with the official logo of the Grand Oak Hotel’s executive concierge service.
Marcus did not take the papers immediately. He kept one arm firmly wrapped around Lily, who was watching the frantic manager with wide, curious eyes.
“What is this?” Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, guarded register.
“It’s not just a seating chart, Mr. Sterling,” the manager panted, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. “It’s the master blacklist Claire instructed the front desk and security detail to enforce starting at 4:00 PM today. She didn't just want your daughter erased from the photographs—she systematically barred every single family member on your side of the family from entering the hotel.”
Nana let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that echoed harshly down the corridor. “That arrogant little fool. She tried to stage a complete palace coup.”
Maya stepped forward, lowering her camcorder just enough to zoom the lens directly onto the top page of the manager’s document. “May I?” she asked politely, before gently pulling the paper away from the manager’s trembling fingers.
Maya scanned the columns rapidly, her professional investigator’s eyes narrowing as her finger traced down the names.
“It’s all here,” Maya said, her voice tight with suppressed anger. “Your aunts, your cousins, your childhood mentors from the foundation—every single person who supported you before you built Sterling Enterprises was flagged as ‘persona non grata’ under explicit instructions from Claire Vance and Arthur Vance.”
Marcus stared at the manager, the full scope of Claire’s calculated isolation campaign finally crashing down upon him. She hadn't just wanted to rid herself of Lily; she had planned to systematically sever every tie Marcus had to his past, his family, and his roots, leaving him entirely dependent on her and her elite social circle.
“Where are they now?” Marcus demanded, his voice suddenly sharp as steel. “The people on that list.”
The manager swallowed hard, taking a nervous step back. “Hotel security intercepted them at the valet entrance two hours ago, sir. Claire told them to turn everyone away, claiming there was a private family emergency and that the wedding had been canceled for non-invited guests.”
Nana gripped the armrests of her wheelchair so hard her knuckles turned entirely white. “Turned away? My own sister and my closest lifelong friends were locked out in the cold by a girl wearing my family’s heirloom pearls?”
“They’re still down in the grand lobby, ma’am,” the manager quickly added, holding his hands up defensively. “Some of them refused to leave because they saw the security commotion. They’ve been waiting in the lower lounge all evening, refusing to abandon the building until they knew you and Lily were safe.”
Marcus looked down at his daughter. Lily managed a small, encouraging nod, her dark curly hair shifting against his shoulder.
“Let’s go down and bring them upstairs,” Marcus said softly, his voice unwavering.

He didn't wait for the manager’s permission. With Lily securely cradled in his strong arms, Marcus turned and walked toward the private
