Chapter 10 - The Federal Seal

The crisp white manila envelope looked impossibly heavy in the hands of the federal agent who stepped out of the elevator. He was dressed in a dark tactical suit, his badge gleaming coldly under the flickering emergency lights of the hallway.

Marcus instinctively tightened his grip on Lily, holding his daughter securely against his chest as the agent approached them with measured, professional strides.

“Mr. Sterling?” the agent asked, holding out his identification badge for inspection. “I’m Agent Vance from the Federal Financial Crimes Division. We received the automated transfer logs and the decrypted corporate server backups transmitted by your investigator.”

Marcus nodded once, his expression hard and unyielding. “I assume the offshore accounts have been frozen?”

“As of three minutes ago,” Agent Vance confirmed, tapping the thick manila envelope against his palm. “Every single dollar Claire Vance and David Miller attempted to siphon from the corporate trust has been successfully intercepted and rerouted back into the primary sterling reserves, designated strictly for your daughter’s medical trust.”

From the floor where he was still slumped against the marble pillar, David let out a strangled, hopeless groan, burying his face in his hands.

Agent Vance glanced down at David with mild disdain before returning his attention to Marcus. “Furthermore, because these funds were illegally diverted under fraudulent medical pretexts, the charges against Claire Vance have been upgraded from grand larceny to federal wire fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion. She’s being transferred to the federal holding facility downtown as we speak.”

Nana let out a quiet breath of satisfaction, leaning back against the plush velvet pillows of her wheelchair. “Well-handled, Agent. It’s rare to see government machinery move with such refreshing efficiency.”

“We had a very thorough data trail provided by Miss Jenkins,” the agent replied, nodding respectfully toward Maya, who still held her camcorder firmly against her chest, the red light glowing a steady, reassuring pulse.

Maya lowered the camera just enough to offer a polite nod in return. “Just doing my job, Agent. The digital footprint was entirely transparent once you knew where to look.”

Marcus looked down at Lily, whose dark curly hair brushed gently against his chin. He could feel her small heart beating steadily against his chest. The terror that had gripped her in the opening moments of the evening finally seemed to be melting away, replaced by a quiet, resilient calm.

“You’re safe now, sweetheart,” Marcus whispered softly into her curls, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “No one is ever going to take your crutches away again. No one is ever going to try to push you out of our lives.”

Lily wrapped her small arms tightly around her father’s neck, burying her face into his tuxedo collar. “I know, Daddy. Nana told me we were a real family, no matter what.”

Agent Vance cleared his throat, pulling a single sheet of paper from the manila envelope and handing it to Marcus. “You’ll need to sign the asset recovery authorization forms, Mr. Sterling, to officially close the investigation loop and secure the trust permanently.”

Marcus shifted Lily to one arm, taking the pen the agent offered, and quickly signed his name across the bottom of the document. He handed it back, his jaw set in a firm, resolute line.

“Consider it done,” Marcus said.

The agent nodded, turning smartly on his heel to head back toward the elevator. But before the doors could close behind him, a frantic commotion echoed from the service stairwell at the far end of the corridor. The heavy steel door banged open, and a breathless, disheveled hotel manager rushed out, waving a thick stack of printed documents frantically in the air.

“Mr. Sterling! Mr. Sterling, please, you have to look at this!” the manager shouted, skidding to a halt on the polished marble floor. “We just found a secondary guest registry hidden in the wedding planner’s private office!”
