Chapter 2 - The Hidden Broadcast

Marcus froze, his hand still hovering protectively over Lily’s small, shaking shoulder. He slowly turned his head to look down the grand hallway toward the ballroom doors. The heavy oak panels, usually sealed tight during private family arguments, stood slightly ajar. Through the narrow gap, the flickering blue glow of hundreds of mobile phone screens illuminated the darkness.
Guests. Dozens of them. They weren't sitting quietly at their tables waiting for the grand entrance; they were standing in tight, whispering clusters, staring directly toward the hallway confrontation.
Maya lowered the camcorder slightly, the red light still blinking a steady, mocking pulse.
“It’s a live stream, Marcus,” Maya said, her tone devoid of emotion, though her eyes betrayed a fierce, protective loyalty to the little girl huddled on the floor. “Nana didn't just hire me to film the wedding highlights. She had me patch the hallway audio straight into the main ballroom sound system.”
Claire’s expression shifted instantly from furious rage to a chilling, calculated performance. She smoothed the front of her expensive white wedding gown, her lips curling into a sickeningly sweet, albeit trembling, smile as she looked directly into the lens of Maya’s camera.
“Oh, darling,” Claire cooed, pitching her voice into a high, innocent register meant to carry down the hall to the waiting crowd. “Everyone is watching. You wouldn't want to humiliate me over a misunderstanding about seating arrangements, would you? The child’s physical therapy equipment is simply a fire hazard in the aisle.”
Lily let out a sharp, ragged sob, burying her face in the purple fabric of her dress. Her crutches lay a few feet away, bent slightly where Marcus had knocked them aside in his rush to shield her.
Marcus took a step toward Claire, ignoring the performance entirely. His boots clicked hard against the marble.
“My daughter’s braces and crutches are not a hazard, Claire,” Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave, rich with a warning that made even the unflappable bride take a nervous half-step back. “And my mother’s name is not to be used to justify your cruelty.”
“Nana signed off on this!” Claire snapped, dropping the innocent act as quickly as she had picked it up. She pointed a manicured finger directly at Lily. “Ask her! She’s the one who said a crippled child walking down the aisle would ruin our society wedding photos in the glossy magazines!”
Maya hit a button on the side of the camcorder, zooming the lens in tightly on Claire’s contorted, angry face.
“Nana hasn’t spoken a word since she was admitted to St. Jude’s Hospice three hours ago,” Maya said smoothly, dropping a bomb that silenced the distant murmurs from the ballroom entirely.
Marcus stopped dead in his tracks. He whipped his head around to stare at Maya, the color draining entirely from his face.
“What did you just say?” Marcus breathed, his protective anger instantly morphing into a cold, crushing dread.
Claire’s face went chalk white beneath her professional spray tan. She darted a panicked look toward the ballroom doors, where a sudden, collective gasp echoed from the gathered crowd of elites.

“You weren't supposed to check your phone until after the ceremony,” Claire whispered, her voice cracking for the first time.
