Chapter 5 - The Frozen Account

Marcus stared at the officer, the words hanging heavy and suffocating in the candlelit air. One point two million dollars. The exact sum liquidated from the family trust fund just this morning—funds designated entirely for Lily’s specialized long-term medical treatments and physical therapy rehabilitation.

“My corporate account?” Marcus repeated, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all human warmth. He slowly turned his head to look down at Claire, whose eyes were darting wildly toward the elevators like a trapped animal.

“It’s a lie,” Claire stammered, her voice pitching up in a frantic, shrill defense as she backed away from the towering groom. “The bank systems are automated! They glitch all the time! Marcus, you know I would never steal from us! We’re getting married—well, we were—”

“You had until midnight to clear out the trust before the prenuptial agreement officially took effect at the stroke of our wedding vows,” Maya interjected smoothly. She stepped forward, lifting the camcorder slightly to frame Claire’s sweating face in a brutal, uncompromising close-up. “I have the bank routing logs right here on my phone, synced directly to the same server Nana set up to monitor the estate holdings.”

David, the best man, pushed his way through the stunned crowd of guests gathered at the ballroom threshold, his face pale and sweating under the harsh lighting.

“Marcus, man, is this true?” David asked, his voice trembling as he looked between his business partner and the terrified bride. “Did she try to drain the operational accounts?”

Marcus didn't answer David. He took two slow, deliberate steps toward Claire, who pressed her back hard against the ornate wallpaper of the hallway, her white wedding dress rustling frantically.

“You planned this from the very beginning,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating with a restrained fury that was infinitely more frightening than a shout. “You didn't just want me. You wanted the entire estate clear of my daughter. You wanted Lily pushed out of the picture completely, down to the last photograph.”

“She’s a burden!” Claire finally screamed, dropping all pretense entirely as she shoved hard against Marcus’s chest. The desperate mask shattered, revealing a woman consumed by pure, venomous greed. “She’s crippled! She will never walk normally, Marcus! Why waste millions on a broken kid when we could have had everything? Nana was dying anyway! She didn't understand the modern world!”

Lily let out a soft gasp, burying her face into her father’s tuxedo coat, her small shoulders shaking.

The police officer didn't wait another second. He stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt and snapping one cuff firmly around Claire’s delicate, silk-adorned wrist.

“Claire Vance, you are under arrest for wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement,” the officer recited professionally, pulling her arm behind her back.

Claire thrashed violently, her pristine blonde updo coming undone in a cascade of hairpins as she screamed obscenities at the cameras flashing from the ballroom doors.

“You can’t do this to me! My father owns half the real estate in this city!” Claire shrieked, kicking her white wedding shoes against the polished marble.

Marcus stood tall, holding his weeping daughter tightly against his side, his eyes fixed on the woman who had tried to erase his child from existence. But as Claire was hauled toward the elevator, she threw one last venomous glare over her shoulder, dropping a final, horrifying truth that froze Marcus in his tracks.

“You think I acted alone?” Claire cackled hysterically as the elevator doors slid open to swallow her up. “Check your safe at home, Marcus! David helped me set up the offshore account this very morning!”
