Chapter 2 - The Ghostly Signature

The murmur of the wedding guests swelled like a rising tide before instantly dying back down as Julian clicked the trackpad again. The screen shifted to display a digitized document bearing a signature so familiar it made Elena’s knees buckle. It was her father’s sweeping, elegant handwriting, authorizing a massive capital redirection from the family foundation straight into an offshore holding account controlled by Julian’s conglomerate.
"That's impossible," Elena whispered, her fingers gripping the edge of the nearest mahogany cocktail table to steady herself. "My father died six months ago. His estate was locked in probate before the wedding even planning began."
"Probate is just a suggestion when you have the right legal counsel," Julian replied coldly, refusing to break eye contact. He closed the laptop halfway, the screen dimming like a setting sun over their ruined future. "And your father knew exactly what he was signing on his deathbed. Or rather, he knew what I told him he was signing to keep your family’s shipping empire out of bankruptcy."
Across the polished floor, Elena’s mother, Beatrice, clutched her sparkly beige bodice, leaning heavily against a bridesmaid in a pale dress who looked equally stunned. Beatrice’s face was chalk-white. She knew about the debt. She had known all along, and the horrifying truth dawned on Elena in a sickening wave of betrayal: her own mother had sold her out to Julian’s empire just to maintain appearances.
"Mom," Elena called out, her voice cracking as she turned away from Julian. "Did you know about this?"
Beatrice opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Instead, she swayed on her feet, her eyes rolling back as the sheer weight of the public scandal finally overwhelmed her. The bridesmaid caught her just before she hit the marble floor, sparking a chaotic scramble of whispered gasps and shuffling feet among the front-row attendees.
Julian didn't even flinch at the commotion. He simply slipped the silver laptop under his arm, his expression hardening into a chilling corporate mask.

"The show is over, Elena," Julian said quietly, stepping past her bridal train without a shred of remorse. "Pack your bags. The helicopter is waiting on the roof, and we have a board meeting in Zurich by morning."
