Chapter 11 - The CFO’s Coup

Marcus walked slowly into the harsh yellow pool of light, the silver screen of his tablet reflecting the flashing red and blue emergency lights outside. He didn't look like a subordinate facing federal law enforcement; he looked like a man who had just inherited an entire corporate empire.
"Good evening, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension. "I must thank you. You spent the last three years hunting down the Alden family ghosts, while I quietly redirected your holding company's primary reserves into a private portfolio under my own name."
Julian stared at his trusted CFO, the blood draining from his face as the terrifying puzzle pieces finally clicked into place. "You forged the counter-terrorism tags... You set up the entire eighty-two million dollar trail to frame me."
"Frame you? No, Julian. I merely accelerated a trajectory you were already on," Marcus smiled, tapping the screen of his tablet. "By the time the federal regulators finish auditing your accounts tonight, not only will your corporate empire be completely dissolved, but every offshore asset you own will be legally seized under emergency national security mandates."
Elena stood frozen, looking from Marcus back to Julian. The grand deception wasn't a family feud between the Vances and the Aldens after all; it was an inside job orchestrated by the very man Julian trusted most with his financial life.
"You used my wedding to execute the final transfer," Elena whispered, the horror of the realization washing over her like freezing water.
"A magnificent distraction, wasn't it?" Marcus chuckled softly. "The media was so busy focusing on the dramatic billionaire wedding scandal that nobody noticed the central bank's automated clearinghouse systems processing forty million dollars an hour straight into the Cayman Islands."
The senior federal director stepped forward, his expression hardening as he looked at Marcus. "Mr. Thorne, you're speaking about classified federal transfer protocols. How did you access the clearance codes?"
Marcus didn't flinch. He simply turned his tablet toward the director, displaying a high-level digital signature that made the federal officer's face turn pale.
"Because, Director, I was never Julian’s CFO," Marcus said, his smile widening into something predatory. "I was the court-appointed receiver assigned to dismantle Vance Industries from the inside out. And as of midnight tonight, I am the new managing director of your entire corporate portfolio."

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, the lights in the hangar flickered violently once, twice, and then plunged the entire building into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
