Chapter 14 - The Final Stand on the Tarmac

The heavy iron hatch flew open with a deafening screech, and cool night air rushed down into the damp tunnel. Julian shoved Elena behind him, holding the cracked tablet tightly in one hand while reaching up to grab the lowest rung of the ladder. As he pulled himself up into the moonlight, a heavy boot came down squarely on his knuckles, sending a sharp jolt of pain through his hand.

Marcus stood at the top of the ladder, silhouetted against the vast expanse of the private airstrip where a sleek white Gulfstream jet idled with its boarding stairs lowered and engines whining at high pitch. Marcus held a heavy titanium wrench in his hand, his face twisted into a snarl of desperation.

"It's over, Julian!" Marcus shouted over the roar of the jet wash. "You can't reverse the transfer! The keys are already transmitted to Zurich!"

Before Marcus could bring the wrench down again, Elena scrambled up the side of the ladder behind Julian, her fingers locking onto Marcus’s ankle with sudden, furious strength. She yanked hard, throwing Marcus off balance. He stumbled backward onto the tarmac, dropping the wrench with a loud metallic clatter against the asphalt.

Julian surged up through the hatch, pinning Marcus to the ground with a single, decisive sweep of his arm. He pressed the cracked screen of the tablet directly against Marcus’s face, forcing the facial-recognition scanner to read the primary administrator override.

"Override code: Vance-Alden-082," Julian commanded sharply into the tablet's microphone.

The screen flashed a brilliant, pulsing green. ACCESS GRANTED. REVERSING TRANSACTION IN PROGRESS.

Marcus thrashed beneath Julian’s grip, screaming curses into the wind as the progress bar on the screen raced from zero to one hundred percent. TRANSACTION CANCELLED. FUNDS RETURNED TO PRIMARY TRUST ACCOUNTS.

Sirens wailed in the distance as a convoy of federal SUVs finally breached the perimeter gate of the private airfield, their high-beam headlights sweeping across the tarmac to illuminate the scene. Marcus slumped against the pavement, completely defeated as federal agents swarmed the area, hauling him to his feet and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Julian stood up slowly, dusting off his ruined tuxedo trousers. He turned around to face Elena, who was standing a few feet away, watching the chaotic scene unfold under the glare of the flashing police lights. The grand wedding was over. The eighty-two million dollars was back where it belonged. And the ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest.
